The highly-anticipated sequel Constantine 2, starring Keanu Reeves, has been in development for quite some time now. In September 2022, Warner Bros. gave the go-ahead, and after more than two years, the director associated with the project recently offered an encouraging update.

The movie “Constantine” is a supernatural action-horror film that takes inspiration from DC Comics’ “Hellblazer” series. Keanu Reeves played the lead character, John Constantine, and the film premiered in 2005, achieving moderate success at the box office. Fans had mixed feelings about it initially, with some criticizing its departure from the comics. However, as time passed, the movie gained a dedicated fanbase who appreciate its moody atmosphere, striking visuals, and Reeves’ impressive portrayal of Constantine. The anticipation for “Constantine 2” remains strong, as plans for a sequel are indeed underway.

Francis Lawrence, who’s known for directing “Constantine” and preparing to lead its sequel, “Constantine 2”, recently chatted with Collider. He hinted that they’re making significant strides in the production process. “I can confidently say we are getting closer than ever to being able to make a sequel, which is fantastic,” Lawrence mentioned. Moreover, he disclosed that his co-producer Akiva Goldsman and Keanu Reeves, who will reprise his leading role, are equally enthusiastic about the project. “And Akiva, Keanu, and I are all extremely excited about it,” Lawrence concluded.

For over two decades, the development of the follow-up faced a standstill; however, substantial strides have been made in terms of the storyline. As Lawrence shared, they’ve delved into the comics published within the last 20 years for inspiration. In his words, “We have an amazing concept brewing. We’ve gone through many comics over the years and taken notes.” He continued, “While there may be traces of elements from those comics, in essence, most of it is our own ideas—a collective passion for the character, the world, and nurturing concepts, stories, and characters we cherish and have been mulling over for 20 years.”

Last year, Reeves provided an exciting update on Constantine 2 during his appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. He referenced their 2021 interview where the actor from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 revealed his efforts to collaborate with the producers for a Constantine sequel, which they initially declined. However, after some time, they consented to the project. Reeves confirmed the production had been approved, stating:

Initially, the possibilities seemed remote (the ‘no’s), but they gradually transformed into potential affirmatives (‘maybe hire a writer’), then tentative affirmations (‘kinda yes’), and currently, I’m in a state of anticipation, waiting for the script.

Keanu Reeves has repeatedly expressed his eagerness to reprise the role of John Constantine. He’s mentioned it on numerous occasions, even going so far as to say that this character is one of his favorites. It’s great to see that he’s finally getting what he desires, as many fans are eagerly anticipating the sequel. There are several unresolved plotlines from the first movie, such as Constantine’s bargain with Lucifer and the ongoing struggle between angels and demons. Additionally, fans are curious about the fate of angel Gabriel after he lost his divine powers. Last seen in a hospital, Gabriel warned Constantine that they could still die like ordinary people. These are just a few threads left hanging, and fans eagerly await closure. Hopefully, we’ll get more news when production begins and a release date is announced.
