Summary
- BBB 25 featured a parody of Death Note‘s second opening, showcasing an unexpected anime reference on free-to-air TV.
- This isn’t the first time BBB referenced anime – last year, Mashle’s opening was played, drawing public attention.
- TV Globo, known for airing children’s anime, has never aired Death Note, but unexpectedly referenced it on BBB 25.
One of Brazil’s well-known reality shows made an unforeseen reference to the “Death Note” during its broadcast on free television.
Big Brother Brasil Season 25 (or BBB 25) marks the 25th installment of this reality series, which shares its name with a Dutch reality show and is part of the global Big Brother franchise. It has been airing on Brazil’s largest free-to-air TV network, TV Globo, as well as its associated channels, since January 13.
Unexpectedly, the program suddenly unveiled a spoof of Death Note’s second opening theme song (“What’s up, people?!,” by Maximum the Hormone), with the host, Tadeu Schmidt, taking center stage. Later, TV Globo shared this amusing clip on their official social media platforms. Don’t miss it!
Not The First Anime Reference in the Show
For the first time, we shouldn’t be surprised to see BBB referencing anime, as last year in BBB 24, the theme song “Bling-Bang-Bang-Born” by Creepy Nuts from Mashle was played and gained widespread attention among the public. Intriguingly, this occurred on the exact same day that the single was officially released, suggesting that there might be an anime enthusiast or two on the BBB production team.
In the video, as the music begins, two dancers start moving, and one of them says, “This is new to me,” given that they were isolated within the reality show’s house for a while.
On Big Brother, contestants live isolated within a single house, disconnected from the wider world, all while aiming to avoid elimination from the program. The show is broadcast each evening on free television, but viewers can also access real-time footage from the house through subscription-based channels (provided they pay for this service, of course).
TV Globo’s History With Anime
In addition to the free television network Globo, the Globo Group also controls paid channels and a streaming platform called Globoplay. However, none of these platforms have ever broadcast “Death Note”. Instead, TV Globo used to air a children’s programming block known as TV Globinho, where many popular anime shows were aired in Brazil, such as “Dragon Ball” (and its sequels) and “Digimon”.
Globoplay broadcasts shows like “Dragon Ball Z Kai,” “Pokemon Sun & Moon,” “Digimon 2,” and “Beyblade Burst.” Notably, some Studio Ghibli films have been recently shown on Gloob, a child-oriented television channel that requires payment.
On previous occasions, references to anime have popped up unexpectedly within Brazil – even the current Vice-President of the nation has made a statement filled with various anime characters.
Death Note is streaming on Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu and many other services in the US.
