Overwatch Adds Ability-Altering Perks, Brings Back Loot Boxes

In Season 15 of Overwatch, a popular hero shooter by Blizzard, two significant updates are anticipated: the introduction of playable advantages (gameplay perks) and the comeback of loot boxes. Known as its “most daring gameplay transformation yet,” perks will allow players to enhance their hero skills with additional abilities during a match in real-time.

Overwatch’s Biggest Content Change Arguably Since the Sequel

In this game, as you progress through a match, you can enhance your character’s equipment by gathering experience points. You can accumulate these points by securing kills, inflicting damage, or healing others. These enhancements function much like Reality Augments in Fortnite; once you acquire the ability to utilize a perk, you can choose one of two available options using your controls. If you decide to switch characters during a match, your character level will restart, but you’ll earn experience at a faster rate. For each match, you have the option to equip three perks: two Minor ones and one Major one.

Alongside the introduction of a revamped rewards system, Season 15 brings back Loot Boxes as a feature. Players can obtain these loot boxes through weekly and special event rewards, as well as one Legendary Loot Box from the free Battle Pass and two more with the Premium version. Each box will contain at least an item of Rare quality or better, with an Epic item guaranteed in every set of five consecutive boxes, and a Legendary item guaranteed in 20 consecutive boxes. If you already possess the item inside a box, it will be replaced with another item of the same rarity.

These two alterations represent merely some of the modifications we’re planning for the next 2-3 seasons. Additionally, there are other modifications in store as well.

  • Competitive rank reset
  • Permanent Overwatch Classic mode, featuring the GOATS Meta (three tanks, three support)
  • New hero: Freja, a bounty hunter with a quick-firing crossbow, a quick dash, and an explosive Bola Shot
  • New cosmetics
  • Stadium mode: a completely overhauled competitive mode featuring a best-of-seven system, new abilities, first and third person mode, and its own ranked mode. Currently in development, launching in season 16

Season 15 officially launches on February 18.
