A fresh game for the Digimon series called “Digimon Story: Time Stranger” was unveiled during the recent February 2025 PlayStation State of Play livestream, accompanied by a trailer showcasing its captivating storyline and iconic creatures. Although it hasn’t quite matched the popularity of its counterpart franchise Pokemon, Digimon has produced numerous video games in different genres throughout its history, ranging from the classic handheld virtual pets to the narrative-focused style of 2022’s “Digimon Survive”.

During Digimon Con 2024, producer Takahiro Yokota hinted at potential future installments in the Digimon Story series. Although he didn’t explicitly confirm that a new game was underway, his words didn’t rule it out either. The first Digimon Story game debuted on the Nintendo DS in 2010 and has since seen several sequels, with the latest being a combined version of Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth and Digimon Story: Hacker’s Memory for the Nintendo Switch in 2019. These games adhered to the traditional monster-raising JRPG structure, allowing players to control classic Digimon characters in turn-based combat.

During the PlayStation State of Play livestream on February 12th, it was confirmed that there’s a new addition to the Digimon Story series titled Digimon Story: Time Stranger. The trailer showcases a cel-shaded world under attack by an enigmatic threat. A female voiceover describes a catastrophic event that spans across parallel dimensions. To confront this danger, players will set off on a voyage, joined by legendary Digimon characters from past eras who are gods, heroes, and monsters in their own right.

The trailer for Digimon Story: Time Stranger then moves on to scenes of the game’s apparently customizable character sprinting through a city, armed with a laser weapon, and riding on the back of a wolf-like creature called Gururumon across dreamlike terrains. Eagle-eyed Digimon enthusiasts might recognize other iconic monsters scattered throughout the trailer, including the franchise’s fire-breathing dinosaur symbol Agumon and its transformations, as well as more ominous creatures like Kuwagamon, the insectoid menace, and Goblimon, a troll-like entity.

For the game titled “Digimon Story: Time Stranger,” an official release date hasn’t been specified beyond a broad 2025 launch window. However, its arrival is eagerly anticipated by Digimon gaming enthusiasts, especially since it’s been around three years since the last Digimon game and about seven years since the last new installment in the Digimon Story series. But fear not, as the wait will soon be over when “Digimon Story: Time Stranger” makes its debut on PlayStation 5 later this year.
