This character possesses permanent, powerful abilities that remain effective across all game eras. The choices we make in selecting our leaders significantly impact the foundation of our Science output, and those with scientifically inclined abilities tend to grow and scale more effectively compared to those without such traits.
Some great starting Science Leader choices in Civ 7 include:
- Himiko, Queen of Wa: Gains a unique Endeavor, Friend of Wei, which can only be performed with an Ally to grant both players +25% Science. Gets +4 Science per Age for every Leader you have been at least Friendly or Helpful with.
- Confucius: 25% extra Growth in Cities, gains +2 Science on every Specialist.
- Ben Franklin: Gains +1 Science per Age for every Endeavor you start or Support, gains extra Science on Production buildings in Cities, 50% Production towards Production buildings.
Once you’ve chosen your Leader, it’s time to pick your initial Civilization. In the early Antiquity Age, there are several options available, with Han and Maya being exceptional choices if you aim for high Science output in Civ 7. As you advance through the ages, keep an eye on strategies to unlock all Civilizations in the Exploration and Modern Eras. Strive to discover ways to access the most science-focused Civilizations.
Some great Science Civ choices in Civ 7 include:
- Maya: Antiquity Civ, gain extra Science on the Palace for adjacent Vegetated tiles, and has unique buildings like the K’uh Nah and Jalaw that grant Science or bonuses from Tech.
- Ming: Exploration Civ, +50% Science in the Capital, but -15 Science every turn for every Social Policy slotted. Does not count Traditions.
- Meiji: Modern Civ, grants Science whenever you Overbuild a building, and has unique buildings that grant Gold and Resource Slots.
Grow Into Science Yields & Get Science Resources

A great method for swiftly accumulating more scientific knowledge once you’ve built a robust science base in one of your cities, is by allocating Science Points. In the game Civ 7, there are just a few resources available for this purpose:
- In the Antiquity Age, Incense will grant 10% extra Science, but can only be slotted into Cities. In Exploration, the effect changes to grant Missionary Production instead.
- In the Modern Age, Tea will grant an extra 3% Science, but you need a Factory in a City to slot this.
To maximize your cities’ and towns’ growth, make sure to consider the resources each grid square (tile) offers. If you notice a small blue beaker symbol on a tile, it means that area will produce Science when worked. Strive to develop these areas as quickly as possible to increase your early Science production significantly.
Certain Civilizations and Technologies offer additional Science bonuses upon research, giving you a boost in Science production. To check whether they enhance your Science output, simply hover over each Civilization or Technology.
Build Science Buildings & Science Wonders

In Civilization VII, the primary method for acquiring Science is by constructing Buildings. Each Era provides two Science-focused Buildings that can be placed in either of the two building slots on each plot of land. Positioning two Buildings on a single plot will transform it into a Quarter, offering advantageous bonuses to specific attributes and enabling you to deploy Specialists.
In Civilization VII, all Science structures offer a +1 Science adjacent bonus for Resources and Wonders (with some also providing a bonus for Quarters). To get the most out of these Science buildings, avoid placing other structures in areas surrounded by numerous Resources or Wonders to optimize your Science production.

- Library grants +2 base Science and +1 for each adjacent Resource & Wonder
- Academy grants +4 base Science and +1 for each adjacent Resource & Wonder
- Exploration Age

- University grants +5 base Science and +1 for adjacent Resources, Wonders, and Quarters
- Modern Age
- Schoolhouse grants +5 Science and +1 for each adjacent Resource & Wonder

In every era, a variety of Awe-inspiring structures can be built once you’ve researched specific Technologies and Governments. Certain structures will boost your Scientific prowess by providing extra Science, or by offering free Technology advancements and increased production benefits.
Wonders that are particularly good to rush for extra Science output include:
- Mundo Perdido: grants +1 Happiness and Science on all Tropical tiles in this settlement.
- Unlocked with Mysticism II (mastery) in Anqituity, must be placed on a Tropical Tile.
- Serpent Mound: +3 Science and +2 Production for all Unique Improvements in this settlement.
- Must be in the Exploration Age, and placed on a Grassland tile.
- Oxford University: Grants two free Techs, grants +4 Science
- Unlocked with the Academics Tech in the Modern Age, must be placed next to a District/Quarter
Slot Science Social Policies & Traditions

Even though science advancements may not rapidly build culture, swiftly advancing the civic tree is important to secure science-focused social policies. Each player starts with Tool Making, an initial social policy that provides both a science and production boost in your capital city.
Other Science Social Policies that are important to prioritize to generate more Science include:
- Literature: Bonus 50% Production towards Science buildings
- Unlocked with the Writing Tech in Antiquity
- Scholars: +1 Science on Specialists
- Preservation Societies: +3 Science from Great Works (Relics, Artifacts, etc)
- Social Science: +2 Science on Specialists, but +50% Specialist Food cost
Focus The Scientific Leader Attribute Tree

In Civilization VII, Science is also earned through Scientific Attribute Points, which you can use to acquire lasting advantages in the Leadership Skill branch. These points can be obtained from several places such as Legacy Path rewards, story-driven events, and certain Wonders.
The best Scientific Leader Attribute Tree nodes to pick up quickly include:
- +25% Science towards researching Tech Masteries.
- +1 Science in Settlements for each Resource assigned to them.
- +20% Gold and Happiness towards maintaining Buildings.
- +10% Science for every Alliance you have.
Research Collaboration Endeavors Create Science

Regardless of the era, the Research Collaboration Initiative is open to fellow Game Leaders. This Agreement offers you mutual Scientific advancements upon acceptance, with a larger share for you and a smaller one for your counterpart. However, if they decide to back this Collaboration, both parties will receive approximately 50% more Science.
If someone proposes a Scientific Collaboration Project to you, consider accepting it as it will bring substantial advancements in science at a lower expense compared to setting up such a collaboration independently.
You certainly have the freedom to start this venture on your own, but keep in mind that it will require a significant amount of influence and there’s a risk they might not agree to it. Also, remember that you can only perform one venture of each type (except when playing as Ben Franklin). Therefore, aim for opponents who are more inclined to back your endeavor.
Generating Science With Specialists

In Civilization VII, one effective method for enhancing your scientific progress involves utilizing Specialists rather than broadening your city. These Specialists can exclusively be positioned within Districts and Quarters (alongside a fully developed City Center), and they will yield additional benefits relative to the production of their assigned tile.
In simpler terms, having a Specialist placed on a specific area gives a slight advantage to neighboring squares as well. This bonus usually amounts to 2-3 points in Science or Culture, and these benefits grow larger when you enhance the productivity of the assigned district or quarter.
One potential rephrase could be: “A challenge with specialists is their need for Food and Happiness resources. Each specialist you place in your settlement will decrease its Food and Happiness levels by 2 units, due to the concentration of population. To counteract this, focus on enhancing Happiness and maximizing Food production within your cities.
