In the game Killing Floor 3, the adversaries that players battle aren’t traditional zombies, despite being often called so. Instead, they are the results of botched experiments, referred to as Zeds. These Zeds appear in various forms, ranging from the common Clot to the massive and aggressive Fleshpound. Although these creatures have been a part of the franchise since its inception, Tripwire Interactive has continuously worked on refining and expanding the Zeds to make them more challenging for players. To delve deeper into the workings and characteristics of Zeds within Killing Floor 3, Game Rant recently interviewed lead combat designer Bill Munk.
How Tripwire Is Approaching Zeds in Killing Floor 3
Familiarity Is Key In Killing Floor 3
Munk elaborated on the features that gamers can anticipate from Zeds in Killing Floor 3, emphasizing that the game’s gunplay is a key factor that makes the series enjoyable and hard to put down. Although new Zeds will appear later, Munk believed it was crucial for the current Zeds to develop within the context of the sequel. In this way, Tripwire aims to create a fresh yet familiar experience for returning players.
In creating Killing Floor 3, our aim was to ensure that players familiar with the first two installments would find a sense of familiarity within the game, as if it were a continuation of the series. Rather than introducing entirely new creatures (Zeds), we chose to refine and enhance the existing ones, enhancing their design and role in combat. We devoted significant effort to improving their actions and behaviors, all while retaining their recognizable traits for long-time fans of the franchise. We’re also working on fresh content for future updates, but unfortunately, we can’t share any details about that at this time.
Killing Floor 3 Encourages Players to Target a Zed’s Critical Points
As a gamer, let me tell you, it’s not just about headshots in Killing Floor 3. You see, we can tactically bring down the Zeds by aiming at various body parts. This transformation turns us into living weapons and gives us an edge in the game. It’s part of a fresh “execution system” that sets Killing Floor 3 apart from its predecessors.
One aspect that stands out is the refined mechanics of Zed’s limbs and hit detection, similar to the Scrake, in Killing Floor 2. Unlike before where focusing on the head was the primary strategy, we aimed to enhance gameplay by introducing multiple critical spots on Zeds, particularly larger ones. This change allows for faster elimination or interruption of these creatures. The execution system is introduced with Scrakes and Fleshpounds, and if their vital areas are destroyed, they essentially explode, taking out any nearby Zeds as well.
Later, Munk discussed upgrades to Zed Time, a change that should aid players in focusing on an enemy’s vulnerable spots more effectively. In the updated version of Zed Time, all aspects have been amplified, enabling players to move quicker and inflict greater damage on enemies. The intention was to make this feature beneficial in any circumstance, and it seems Tripwire has achieved this goal successfully. Those eager to join the action in Killing Floor 3 will be able to do so when it launches on March 25.
