In another time, it’s plausible to develop a fresh narrative with familiar themes, yet not an exact replica. For instance, in the near future, we might encounter a survivor seeking vengeance for Muzan, or perhaps a demon entirely unconnected to him with parallel objectives born from a similar scientific endeavor elsewhere – this could potentially feel overly repetitive. However, in the far-off future, it’s possible that someone has retold the tale using advanced technology to create demons instead.

In the climactic phase of the series, it’s conceivable that Tanjiro momentarily assumes the role of the Demon King. An alternative perspective – which might stir some fan reactions – is transforming him into a new antagonist. This twist could also serve as a “what if” scenario, where the positions are reversed and now, it’s Nezuko who strives to rescue him.

In essence, even though there might be an opportunity to reintroduce demons, fans might perceive this as overstretching the series. Given the conclusion and the Kimetsu Gakuen spin-off, it appears that Koyoharu Gotoge prefers to create a sequel with a school setting where demons are absent. Nevertheless, he could make occasional appearances or even be hinted at throughout the narrative. An intriguing twist might involve the Hashira facing a crisis that splits them apart – it could escalate to the point where one Hashira is tricked by Muzan and transforms into a demon, taking on the role of the main antagonist in the story.

In other words, there are numerous possibilities when it comes to creating a prequel (or even multiple prequels!) for the story. The author isn’t limited to using familiar characters or those connected to them. Instead, they could opt for an historical setting such as the Kamakura Era, Muromachi Era, Sengoku Jidai period, or Edo Era and develop the narrative accordingly.
