Summary
- A doodle of a sword-wielding knight seen in the Overwatch 2 Spotlight sparks speculation about hero 45.
- Recent hero reveals include Freya and Aqua, but hero 45 remains a mystery for Season 20 in 2025.
- Melee heroes like a potential gladiator character are speculated.
Fans of Overwatch 2 might have caught a hint about hero number 45 during the latest Spotlight event, appearing as a humorous, sword-bearing knight in the backdrop. Although this could turn out to be insignificant, some enthusiasts of Overwatch 2 speculate whether the next hero introduced in 2025 will be a melee character armed with a sword – and potentially one of the gladiators from Colosseo.
At the latest Spotlight gathering, Blizzard unveiled the two new characters set to join Overwatch 2: Freya, a damage-dealing character from season 16 who is quite intricate in nature, and Aqua, a support character currently under codename for season 18. Regrettably, no details were shared regarding the 45th hero anticipated towards the end of 2025 in season 20.
It’s possible that some astute fans of Overwatch 2 might have stumbled upon a hint for this upcoming hero subtly placed within the Spotlight presentation. During the introduction of Freya, a sketch of an unidentified character in Overwatch 2’s distinctive placeholder art style can be seen on one of the screens in the background. This mysterious figure seems to be a knight with spiked armor, a large ponytail, and a comically large sword, appearing rather angry in demeanor.
Sword-Wielding Knight in Overwatch 2 Spotlight
Although the details are scarce, fans have started pondering over who this potential character might represent. Some observant players have pointed out that the overall shape of this character appears to resemble Magnus, the sword-bearing gladiator whose monument stands in the heart of the Colosseo map’s Hall of Champions. Additionally, a scoreboard and advertisement on the map hint at an ongoing rivalry between Maximus and Zephyrus – two remote-controlled gladiators engaged in a bitter feud inside the Colosseo arena. If Magnus were to be introduced as a new character, it’s plausible that this figure could also be an autonomous combat robot. As Season 16 brings us Gladius, a fresh map within the Colosseo for the Stadium game mode in Overwatch 2, introducing a hero from the city a few seasons later seems fitting.
During the Spotlight event, game director Aaron Keller of Overwatch 2 had a conversation with content creator Frogger. He revealed that developers have been seriously considering the addition of melee heroes in the game. Despite the challenges posed by the first-person perspective of Overwatch 2, Keller mentioned they have found a solution to this problem, possibly through testing a third-person viewpoint like the one in Stadium, or some other innovative technology.
It’s worth mentioning that no definitive information has been disclosed about Hero 45 as of now. Previous hints suggesting potential characters for Overwatch 2, such as Maximilien as Hero 43, have turned out to be incorrect. However, the recent Easter egg discovery is bound to spark a lot of speculation until the true identity of Hero 45 is unveiled later this year.
