Cloud9 has announced on social platforms that they are temporarily withdrawing from the competitive scene of Counter-Strike 2. Since early January, their entire CS2 roster was released, leaving fans unsure about the organization’s plans for the CS2 esports sector.
The news that Sweetypotz and Groove are leaving the team has led to the disclosure that Cloud9 will be temporarily stepping away from playing Counter-Strike.
No Plans
In the post on social media, the Cloud9 social team wrote:
Upon their exit, team C9 is momentarily distancing themselves from Counter-Strike 2. For now, there’s no definitive plan to return, but our passion for CS remains unwavering, and we’re open to potential chances that may arise in the future.
Recently, Cloud9 has faced challenges in the world of Counter-Strike. They last lifted a major trophy at IEM Dallas back in 2022. Since then, there have been occasional victories at smaller tournaments, but generally speaking, other top teams in the Counter-Strike 2 circuit have outperformed Cloud9.
In 2024, the best that Cloud9 could muster was a sixth-place finish at the PGL Major in Copenhagen.
2021 was a challenging year for our organization, as our team’s performance in some crucial tournaments was less than satisfactory. Here are the outcomes we achieved:
Last year proved to be tough on our organization due to disappointing results from our team in several significant competitions. These are the performances we managed:
- IEM Katowice 2024 – 16th place
- IEM Chengdu 2024 – 12th place
- Perfect World Shanghai – 21st place
- Thunderpick World Championship – 10th place
The news arrives near the beginning of IEM Dallas, scheduled to run until May 2025. While Cloud9’s chances of regaining their past glory at this tournament appear to be diminished, the organization may not have seen its last days. There are no immediate plans for a comeback, but potential opportunities could arise between now and May.
