Sakamoto Days Fans Want a Remake

Summary

  • Sakamoto Days anime adaptation has divided fans, leading to discussions about a potential remake.
  • Many fans are dissatisfied with the anime adaptation, citing issues with action scenes and missing comic scenes.
  • While the series has high ratings on Netflix, manga sales have not followed the same trend, sparking concerns about commercial success.

The anime adaption of “Sakamoto Days” has sparked debate among fans, with some going as far as suggesting a remake for at least the first season. Despite its positive ratings on Netflix, many viewers of “Sakamoto Days” are not satisfied with the animated version. Initially, complaints focused on the action scenes, which were found to be stiffer than expected for such an anticipated production. However, as the series unfolded, more fans began expressing dissatisfaction that numerous comic scenes (or even entire episodes) were omitted from the adaptation. This has left a significant number of manga readers feeling disappointed, as they are either fans of the action sequences or the humor in the original work.

Currently, some enthusiasts are debating on Reddit whether this series should be re-imagined in the style of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, for those who may not be familiar with Fullmetal Alchemist, the initial anime (2003) enjoyed success but significantly changed several events from the original tale. Six years after that, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, a faithful adaptation of the manga, was produced.

“It Deserves A Remake, But So Do Many Other Series”

One unsatisfied fan started out by questioning whether or not the anime should have a remake:

I’d appreciate your thoughts on this – would you say that the first season of the anime should be remade in a manner similar to Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood?

Few respondents answered affirmatively, but some users added thoughtful remarks suggesting that numerous other manga could also benefit from a remake. A user, for instance, noted this:

Yes. But so does Tokyo Ghoul. And Berserk. And Blue Lock. And etc etc etc.

It’s a dream of many, including myself, for Sakudayas to match the animation quality of JJK and Sunghoo Park’s fight choreography. However, it seems highly unlikely that this will ever come true. So, we can only appreciate what has been given to us and savor the manga in the meantime.

There’s a possibility, albeit slim, that TMS might transfer the project for Season 2 to us, but I find it unlikely. The most favorable situation we can realistically expect is having a more experienced action director from TMS and improved working schedules for our animators.

A third user pointed out that a remake is probably not a viable option for now:

In simpler terms, it’s possible that the quality of the animation improves slightly for the Blu-ray version in the near future, and seasons following the second one may look even better. Alternatively, there might be a new Season 2 at some point.

Although fans are merely engaging in civil online discussions, as is appropriate, it’s evident that some feel disheartened by the anime. Moreover, there seems to be a concern among several fans about the working environment surrounding its production.

In simpler terms, it appears that many people who only watch anime versions of the series are enjoying themselves – some have even picked up the manga and acknowledged they now grasp the criticisms. This particular Shonen Jump adaptation seems to have caused a unique divide among its fans like no other recent one.

Sakamoto Days Netflix Ratings Vs. Manga Sales

Ever since its debut, “Sakamoto Days” has consistently topped the weekly viewing charts on Netflix Japan, and it’s also gaining popularity on the global weekly charts. Some people even argue that it’s currently the most-watched anime on Netflix in terms of audience numbers.

Contrarily, manga sales appear to deviate from the anticipated trajectory. Although they aren’t poor, they’re not meeting expectations either, at least for the moment. It remains uncertain if this substantial audience will translate into commercial sales, as Season 2 might hold some unexpected twists for fans who are currently discontented.

Sakamoto Days is currently streaming on Netflix, subbed and dubbed in many languages.
