Summary
- Kinemon’s unwavering determination to save Wano despite setbacks shows true loyalty and resilience.
- Enel’s stubborn god complex makes him a fierce fighter who refuses to be convinced otherwise.
- Luffy’s stubborn nature enhances his strength and likability, as he charges forward towards his dream.
People who are familiar with the world of One Piece understand that many of its characters can be incredibly obstinate and headstrong. Given the universe’s abundance of dreams, convictions, and ideologies, it’s no surprise that these characters often resist others’ suggestions or push them away, as they are so deeply rooted in their own beliefs.
From my perspective, it’s fascinating to observe that while obstinacy can give certain characters the drive to push forward relentlessly without hindrance, it can also make them difficult to collaborate with or engage in dialogue. This trait is not exclusive to a few of the series’ protagonists, like some Straw Hats, but also extends to certain antagonists who have resisted Luffy and his team’s attempts to alter their grand scheme and malicious intentions. Now, let’s delve deeper into understanding just how obstinate these One Piece characters can be — and uncover the factors that shaped this stubbornness within them from the start.
9. Kine’mon
Kine’mon Never Gave Up On Saving Wano, No Matter How Much He Lost Along The Way
- First Appearance: Episode 580
As one dedicated to Oden’s teachings, I, Kine’mon, found myself with the daunting mission: to restore Wano’s borders, overtaken by the ruthless Kaido and his fearsome Beast Pirates. Stranded, deceived, and facing seemingly insurmountable odds, I remained steadfast in my resolve, refusing to let the weight of my hardships dampen my optimism.
Instead of choosing a peaceful life with Momonosuke, Kine’mon remained resolute in facing the turmoil of Wano, never losing sight of his goal. He even took on the role as samurai leader during the Onigashima Raid. His dedication was so unwavering that he was willing to give up his life for Wano’s freedom, fortunately, he survived, demonstrating his commitment to fulfilling his master’s vision.
8. Enel
There’s Simply No Hope In Convincing Enel Out Of His God Complex
- First Appearance: Episode 167
Enel isn’t just obstinate in his character traits, but also as a combatant. His Devil Fruit abilities and keen Observation Haki lead him to think of himself as a divine being entitled to govern the Sky Islands, despite Luffy and others trying to reason with him. This arrogance results in him showing no remorse when destroying villages or using his electrical powers against those who criticize him.
Previously noted, it’s worth highlighting that Enel is not only a formidable combatant but also an unyielding one. He’s the type who becomes a persistent bother for his adversaries because he never surrenders. Remarkably, even after being defeated midway through the Skypiea arc, Enel managed to revive himself by shocking his own heart; such is his stubborn refusal to allow anyone to undermine his divine image.
7. Whitebeard
There’s Hard To Kill, And Then There’s Whitebeard
- First Appearance: Episode 485
In the grand scope of this series, the once Yonko, Edward Newgate – famously known as Whitebeard among both pirates and marines – stands out as an exceptionally powerful combatant. His Gura Gura no Mi fruit imbues him with earth-splitting strength, yet he is not only a skilled hand-to-hand fighter but also wields potent Haki abilities. However, it wasn’t until the Marineford War that his unyielding determination and sheer stubbornness as a ‘father’ were truly brought to light.
In the heat of the battle, Whitebeard was not only a primary focus for the Marines but also several pirates, including Crocodile who attempted to claim his head at the onset. Despite enduring 267 sword strikes, 152 gunshots, and 46 cannonballs, Whitebeard refused to fall, persisting even in death. The absence of a single wound on his back underscores Whitebeard’s unyielding devotion to the pirate code, serving as an inspiring testament for his crew members.
6. Smoker
Smoker’s Stubborn Pride Puts Him At Odds With Luffy
- First Appearance: Episode 48
A smoker finds himself in an uncomfortable predicament as a Marine. His job, being a Marine, inherently makes him an adversary to pirates. However, he has personally witnessed the tireless efforts of Luffy and the Straw Hats in rescuing people. This includes their role in liberating Alabasta from Crocodile’s grip, as well as saving children who were subjects of Caesar Clown’s experiments.
I must admit, I’ve always been skeptical about pirates, including Luffy, ever being truly good or redeemable. This skepticism makes us natural adversaries, him and me. Interestingly, Smoker, a Marine I once respected for his unwavering loyalty to the World Government, has recently begun to express doubts about his role. For years, he’s stood firm, but now there seems to be a crack in his allegiance. It will be intriguing to see how this evolves.
5. Portgas D. Ace
Ace Could Never Believe He Was Worth Saving Due To His Lineage
- First Appearance: Episode 91
Born to the legendary Gol D. Roger, Ace didn’t have a very enjoyable childhood. People would often ridicule and belittle him because of his association with the man who sparked the grand age of piracy, making him feel unwanted and insignificant. However, his perspective began to shift after joining Whitebeard’s crew, and he became so attached to the concept of ‘family’ that it led him to pursue Blackbeard even when it was evidently a poor choice, as Blackbeard had betrayed Ace and the rest of the crew earlier.
In Marineford, Ace’s unyielding nature becomes evident as he calls out for Whitebeard and Luffy to stay away, not perceiving himself as deserving of rescue. Until the very end, Ace clung to the belief that he was insignificant enough to warrant concern from others. However, in his last breaths, he found it within him to express gratitude towards Luffy for loving him throughout their long friendship.
4. Boa Hancock
Boa Will Always Have Her Way, Rather Than Taking The Opinions Of Her Allies
- First Appearance: Episode 409
Through various flashbacks and stories told, it becomes clear that Boa Hancock has been quite obstinate since her early years. Despite Gloriosa providing them with a home, Hancock refuses to acknowledge the ‘debt’ she owes the village elder. Instead, she often scolds and looks down upon her.
After she develops feelings for Luffy, she becomes more confident in her beliefs, disregarding comments about its absurdity from others. As demonstrated by her actions during the Thriller Bark invasion and Marineford War, Hancock is willing to take significant risks to win Luffy’s affection, regardless of the potential danger.
3. Buggy
Buggy Will Believe He’s The Very Best Until The End Of Time
- First Appearance: Episode 4
It’s surprisingly frequent that Buggy has been rescued, either by a fellow crew member or Luffy, and then he claims credit for the plan as if he had masterminded it all along, in an attempt to boost his image as a valiant pirate captain. However, the reality is, Buggy clings to the belief that he’s a brave and noble pirate who can accomplish anything, despite his cowardice. No matter how dire the circumstances, they won’t dissuade him from maintaining his self-inflated image.
Interestingly enough, this situation has unexpectedly benefited Buggy, given that he’s been elevated to the rank of Yonko. Yet, ironically, much of his success can be attributed to others rather than himself. It’s as if you were trying to convince a stone that it’s not an immovable structure; Buggy is just too stubborn to accept being seen as anything less than a fearless pirate captain.
2. Akainu Sakazuki
It Seems Unlikely Akainu Will Ever Turn His Back On His Form Of ‘Absolute Justice’
- First Appearance: Episode 225
Each Marine admiral possesses a distinct notion of justice that guides their actions when confronted by a group of pirates. For Akainu, his ‘Absolute Justice’ philosophy dictates that he will take any measures required to eliminate anyone associated with piracy, as well as those who might reveal the Marines’ secrets, regardless of circumstances.
It’s particularly clear in this instance that Akaini showed no mercy when he initiated a Buster Call on the peaceful island of Ohara, due to their research into the Void Century. This action resulted in the deaths of nearly everyone there, most of whom were innocent civilians. Despite facing criticism for his harsh leadership style as fleet commander, especially from Fujitora and Garp, Akaini remains unwavering in his beliefs. No matter how many of his subordinates turn against him, he will never compromise his convictions.
1. Monkey D. Luffy
Luffy’s Stubborn Nature, Which Constantly Thrusts Him Into Danger, Is One Of His Biggest Strengths
- First Appearance: Episode 1
Luffy typically disregards advice from others and instead pursues his goals with unwavering determination, regardless of doubters or warnings about potential dangers. This trait is well-known by Law, who on numerous instances has attempted to devise a strategic strategy alongside Luffy, only for the carefree captain to plunge headlong into action without giving tactical considerations a second thought.
In the entire series, Luffy stands out as one of the most tenacious fighters, miraculously getting back up after being defeated by formidable opponents such as Doflamingo, Crocodile, and even Kaido. It’s Luffy’s unyielding spirit that endears him to many, blending his comical side with a character that fans adore for his relentless pursuit of becoming the Pirate King, despite seemingly insurmountable odds.
