After 12 official team matches and just three during VCT Americas, NRG Esports has decided to replace Andrew “Verno” Maust and their VALORANT coach, Malkolm “bonkar”. Following impressive showings at offseason competitions that generated high anticipation, NRG Esports has implemented substantial alterations early on.
Verno and Bonkar Out From NRG After Only a Dozen Official Matches
It’s been whispered that the lineup of NRG’s VALORANT team might change since Kickoff ended, and today, those rumors were validated by the organization itself. According to NRG’s Chief Gaming Officer Jaime Cohenca, this decision is due to a growing lack of unity within the team that has been festering for quite some time.
In a post on X, Cohenca stated that we assembled a squad capable of competing for international titles, but unfortunately, we lacked unity as a team. Winning SEN City and SOOP [during the offseason] only postponed the problems that were building up. The team was no longer operating effectively in its current form, so keeping the same five players and head coach was not feasible.
Due to the demanding nature of the VCT schedule, this pause presents our best opportunity to execute any necessary roster changes. Therefore, we’re currently preparing ourselves to act swiftly once a spot in Champs becomes available.

It appears that Sam “s0m” Oh, Pujan “FNS” Mehta, and Ethan “Ethan” Arnold will continue to be main players in the NRG lineup. Adam “mada” Pampuch, who joined the team recently, is expected to stay on due to impressive stats shown at Kickoff. Some fans are hopeful that former coach Chetan “Chet” Singh might return once his suspension ends following Masters Bangkok. This suspension was imposed by Riot Games for streaming confidential VODs on his personal channel.
In their opening matches at the Kickoff event, NRG suffered defeats against Cloud9 and KRÜ, but sandwiched a victory over 100T in between. Regrettably, these wins didn’t contribute to their qualification for Champions. The team will return to action when VCT Americas Stage 1 kicks off towards the end of March.
