Summary
- The Last of Us showrunner confirms a mentioned character from The Last of Us Part 2 will have a bigger role in Season 2.
- Potential options include the Seraphite Prophet and the love interests of Joel and Ellie.
- Season 2 of The Last of Us will also include cut content from the game.
The upcoming second season of HBO’s television series adapted from the post-apocalyptic video game “The Last of Us” is set for release in 2025. The first season did an outstanding job of fleshing out characters from Naughty Dog’s original game that didn’t receive much attention in the source material, and if the second season follows suit, there are several characters from “The Last of Us Part 2” that warrant further exploration.
During a chat with Entertainment Weekly, The Last of Us series’ mastermind Neil Druckmann hinted that a character frequently discussed in the game will play a more significant role in the upcoming season. In comparison to how they developed Bill (portrayed by Nick Offerman) and Frank’s (Murray Bartlett) tale in Season 1, which unfolded as a heart-breaking love story spanning decades in Episode 3, this character could be in line for an enhanced presence. As of yet, Druckmann hasn’t revealed the specific character from The Last of Us Part 2, but given that the second season will delve into content that didn’t make it to the game, there are several characters who could (and arguably should) step into the limelight in The Last of Us Season 2.
Missing The Last of Us Part 2 Characters That Should Be Included In The HBO Series
The Prophet

Among the characters from “The Last of Us Part 2” that seem ripe for further exploration, none stand out quite as much as the Seraphite Prophet. This enigmatic figure, who initiated the Seraphites and their spiritual ideologies, was merely mentioned throughout the game, frequently depicted in murals scattered around Seattle or alluded to covertly by the Scars, particularly Yara and Lev.
In The Last of Us Part 2, hints about the Prophet’s past can be found, but a standalone episode delving deeper into the character’s history and the origins of the Seraphites would captivate fans of The Last of Us. This intriguing tale might draw some of Hollywood’s top actors, which could align with Neil Druckmann’s hinted “cool casting” reveal in his recent interview.
In The Last of Us Part 2, there are hints about the Prophet’s past, yet a self-contained episode that delves deeply into his history and the origins of the Seraphites would captivate fans of The Last of Us.
Cat (Ellie’s ex-girlfriend)
In the game The Last of Us Part 2, when players rejoin Ellie’s story, she has spent the previous five years residing in Jackson with Joel and Tommy. This settlement provides a somewhat peaceful life, allowing Ellie to enjoy some typical teenage experiences, such as having her first girlfriend. Cat, Ellie’s former partner, is frequently mentioned in Ellie’s journal and during conversations between Ellie and Dina. While details about Cat are scarce, we know she is an artist who gave Ellie her forearm tattoo. Their relationship also creates tension in the bond between Ellie and her new girlfriend, Dina (who appears in The Last of Us Part 2).
In one of the deleted scenes from “The Last of Us Part 2”, it was planned for Cat to participate in the Jackson dance, providing an opportunity for players to chat with her before Ellie and Dina shared their kiss at the dance. Although this scene didn’t make it into the final game, the upcoming TV series could provide a platform to develop Ellie and Cat’s relationship further. This might involve reintroducing Cat during the dance sequence or even exploring their relationship throughout the time gap between Part 1 and Part 2.
Joel’s Love Interest
Much like Ellie, I discovered in my time at Jackson that Joel harbored feelings for someone special, whom we never got to meet in the game itself. However, writers Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross shared in an interview with The Washington Post after the release of The Last of Us Part 2, that they initially intended to introduce Joel’s girlfriend, Esther. As per their account, Esther resided in a community located a few hours from Joel, and they maintained a long-distance relationship. Players might have encountered her a couple of hours into the game, when Joel and Ellie were on a mission and found Esther’s settlement overrun by infected. In this heart-wrenching scenario, Joel would have spared her the suffering and put an end to her infection.
In the disheartening finale of “The Last of Us,” there’s a chance for character development in season 2 by introducing Esther. If the series decides to delve deeper into backstory, exploring Joel’s life in Jackson between the two games – particularly his romantic connections – could intensify the emotional impact of Joel’s storyline in season 2.
Eugene

In Season 2 of “The Last of Us,” there’s a possibility that the creators could delve deeper into the character of Eugene, a resident of Jackson who formed a tight bond with Dina. It was disclosed that Eugene used to be a Firefly alongside Tommy, and their past actions were rather unmentionable. After establishing himself in Jackson, Eugene started teaching Dina electronics repair and constructed a sanctuary for himself within an abandoned library on one of the patrol routes. Tragically, as revealed in the game, Eugene passed away at 73 due to a stroke.
In the game, Eugene is a character that Tommy didn’t interact with face-to-face. Exploring Eugene’s background can provide insight into Tommy’s past and introduce a character significant to Dina.
The Last of Us Season 2 will be released in April on Max.
