Summary
- Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds boasts a massive cast of familiar and surprising characters, including Metal Sonic and Big The Cat.
- The game welcomes back fan favorites like Silver The Hedgehog and feature unique characters like Cream The Rabbit and Omega.
- Jet The Hawk, absent since the Riders trilogy, returns alongside characters like Sage for exciting races in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.
Excitement is building around the upcoming racing game, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, with trailers suggesting this could be Sonic’s most daring high-speed racer ever. The State of Play presentation unveiled features like switching between tracks during a match, new items, and a variety of vehicles to use. It also highlighted some long-absent characters from the series, several of whom haven’t appeared for quite some time.
In contrast to Sonic Team Racing, which had a decent lineup of well-known characters, CrossWorlds appears to be an expansive tribute to the series with its seemingly immense character roster. To prevent fans from having to sift through the trailers to identify everyone, this write-up will highlight the confirmed playable characters based on recent previews, focusing mainly on the most intriguing and unexpected additions to the cast, as we’ll be skipping over familiar faces like the blue hedgehog himself.
8. Metal Sonic
Eggman Isn’t The Only Villain Getting Behind The Wheel
Metal Sonic has appeared in numerous side games, and once more, he’s causing havoc – this time, as the driver. Since his debut in Sonic CD, this metallic doppelganger of the Blue Blur has been a playable character in several racing games and even some fighting ones. Given his history of popping up in new releases, whether they’re main series or spin-offs, it’s no surprise to see him screeching tires in CrossWorlds.
It appears that in the game “CrossWorlds”, there are no limitations on the number of villains that can appear. Consequently, Metal Sonic might be one of several adversaries to emerge. Given his immense popularity, particularly with the upcoming new “Sonic” movie, it’ll still be exciting to control him in action!
7. Big The Cat
Big Takes Some Time Out Of His Fishing Schedule To Show His Fellow Racers How It’s Done
Big the Cat is a character from Sonic’s crew who is generally adored, yet it must be admitted that he isn’t the most energetic fellow around. In most of the games where he appears, Big spends his time lazing about and fishing with Froggy. However, on rare occasions, he demonstrates his racing skills, a talent he plans to showcase once more in the upcoming game, CrossWorlds.
Although Big might be part of Sonic’s team in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, it has been confirmed that he will reappear in the game “CrossWorlds”. However, whether Froggy will accompany him on his tracks remains to be seen as we move forward in time.
6. Silver The Hedgehog
The Time-Traveling Hedgehog Returns To Cause Mischief On The Tracks
Contrary to most characters from the Sonic universe, Silver didn’t make his first appearance in the ’90s or during the early phase of the franchise. Instead, he was introduced in the controversial Sonic 06 game. Despite the negative response to that game, Silver has become a beloved character among many fans due to his distinctive abilities and otherworldly design.
In various spin-offs, Silver has been introduced as a playable character, and CrossWorlds plans to follow suit. It would be wonderful if Silver could exchange witty remarks with Sonic and Blaze during the races, as it’s delightful to witness this hedgehog occasionally showcase his strong friendships with his companions.
5. Cream The Rabbit
Cream Is Usually Skipped Over With The Racing Games, But She’s Partaking In The Chaos For The Latest Installment
In the world of Sonic, Cream holds a somewhat special status. She’s undeniably a familiar face among the characters, but when it comes to limited space in a game, she is sometimes left out, particularly in racing scenes. Yet, glimpses of her have been seen in the previews for CrossWorld, joyfully zipping about in a compact, light-orange go-kart. Furthermore, as always, her faithful Chao friend will be by her side during their journey.
In the game Team Sonic Racing, players had the ability to control a team of Chao using a Chao Pod, except for Cream who was strangely missing from the lineup. Given that most other major characters were present, her absence seemed unusual. It’s refreshing then, to find out she’s back this time around, as it would have seemed like Sonic Team might be biased against Cream, a cherished and caring friend of Sonic.
4. E-123 Omega
Eggman’s Revenge-Fueled Robot Will No Doubt Be A Real Thorn In The Doctor’s Side
For those unaware, E-123 Omega is a formidable robot created by Eggman, serving as a guardian for Shadow the Hedgehog. Despite being confined to a capsule, Omega harbors resentment towards Doctor Eggman for what he perceives as wasted potential. In his quest for revenge, this character may find an opportunity in the newest game, reappearing once more.
Because Omega isn’t heavily significant to the Sonic lore and is also a relatively obscure character, there’s often uncertainty about whether he’ll feature in a new game. However, his unexpected appearance as an NPC in the open world of Shadow Generations has kept the excitement for Omega alive.
3. Vector The Crocodile
Vector Takes The Driver’s Seat As The Representative Of Team Chaotix
Despite being a major figure within the franchise, Vector never hesitates to join his friends for a race in a kart, provided there’s compensation involved. Although he’s not as widely recognized as other characters in the series, having first appeared in “Knuckles’ Chaotix” back in 1995, Sonic Team has been increasingly incorporating Vector into the main cast, particularly in spin-off games.
If it’s undecided whether Espio and Charmy will join the game, it implies Vector could be the only member from Team Chaotix showing off his team’s abilities to other competitors. However, if Espio and Charmy do make it into the game, they’ll certainly have plenty of amusing exchanges as they race towards the finish line.
2. Sage
After Debuting In Sonic Frontiers, Sage Is Finally Becoming A Playable Character
As a dedicated fan, I must admit that I, along with many others, assumed Sage would make a single appearance in the epic tale of Sonic Frontiers and then fade into obscurity. So, it’s absolutely thrilling to learn that she’s not only back but is now a racer in CrossWorlds!
Though Sage was initially portrayed as the antagonist in Frontiers, it quickly became clear that this formidably powerful being, who harbored such profound loneliness, was far more complex than any of us had initially grasped. Sonic and his friends were only beginning to scratch the surface of her true character when the story concluded. Now, I eagerly await uncovering more about Sage in CrossWorlds!
In that game, I endure quite a challenging ordeal, but now that Sage has taken the reins and found her individuality, she’s undoubtedly going to be a formidable competitor on the tracks. The sleek, dark, and captivating design of her kart is an absolute visual delight, and I have no doubt it will boost her popularity significantly.
1. Jet The Hawk
A Fan-Favorite Who Hasn’t Been Seen Since The Riders Trilogy Of Games
Among characters from the series’ past, it seems fitting that Jet, the head of the Babylon Rogues and Sonic’s long-time rival in the Riders trilogy, should return for a racing entry. Just as in the original games, Jet is depicted using his Extreme Gear board in the trailer, while other racers use karts. This unique characteristic makes Jet an intriguing character to play with in the game.
Although Jet has gained a significant following due to his humorous character and intriguing past that remains unexplored, it’s been over a decade since he was last playable in the game “Sonic Free Riders” (2010). Fortunately, the creators at Sonic Team haven’t overlooked Jet. After 15 years, the sarcastic and spirited hawk is making a comeback on the tracks, aiming to outshine Sonic yet again.
