In the expansive open world of Hogwarts Legacy, verticality and complex interior designs could potentially make navigation tricky, but the game’s exceptional action-RPG movement mechanics alleviate this challenge. For instance, Hogwarts Legacy provides players with a navigational aid system similar to that in Dead Space, helping them keep track of objectives while maintaining an immersive experience through the Wizard’s Field Guide. Moreover, the ability to fast travel to any Floo Flame locations previously discovered enables players to swiftly move between Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry’s numerous towers and corridors, whether ascending or descending.

In simpler terms, Hogsmeade is a vast commercial area that can be confusing to navigate unless you use the Floo Network or find your way using the Three Broomsticks as a reference point. On the other hand, the Scottish Highlands present unique challenges, especially when dealing with dungeons and hidden treasure vaults. In the game Hogwarts Legacy, much of the open-world exploration is optional, such as collecting items or taking on Field Guide challenges in less accessible areas, but even the most trivial tasks are enticing because movement within the game feels so free and responsive.

Hogwarts Legacy’s Movement Mechanics Make Its Open-World Traversal a Treat

In “Hogwarts Legacy,” you won’t find challenging platforming elements. Instead, the game offers a smooth traversal experience that involves jumping onto ledges or soaring through the air on a broom or magical creature. The movement is swift and seamless, and the landscape is carefully designed to indicate which areas are climbable. Furthermore, the game provides an intuitive interaction with environments, whether you’re on a broomstick or not, enhancing the overall gameplay experience.

  • Players can scale nearly any crag, leaping to high ledges or gravitating toward walls that are climbable, which is impressive and appreciated because players no longer need to frequently engage in such platforming once they’re able to traverse freely on a broom or mount.
  • Players can fall from high precipices and break their fall by landing on their broom in midair.
  • Players can loot while mounted, meaning they can do a quick sweep on an enemy encampment with Revelio and glide around swiftly to loot anything that’s been highlighted without ever dismounting.
  • Players can mount their broom while in a body of water rather than having to swim to shore.
  • Merlin Trials in Hogwarts Legacy that have players traverse between platforms without making contact elsewhere can be exploited by simply flying across each platform and making brief contact with them (with success confirmed via a lovely chime and roots ensnaring platforms thereafter).

Hogwarts Legacy Doesn’t Exploit Traversal as Much as It Could

In Hogwarts Legacy, swift jumps and climbing are cleverly utilized in the intricate puzzle rooms filled with cubes. As players nimbly move around the room, they can either summon or repel the cubes using magic spells like Accio or Depulso, and then leap onto these floating platforms to create unique, suspended pathways that lead them to hidden treasure chests.

It’s unfortunate that there aren’t many of these puzzle rooms in the game and that Hogwarts Legacy doesn’t utilize its smooth character movement more effectively within the gameplay. A slower pace would make Hogwarts Legacy a tedious experience, even with the option to fast travel or fly to different locations in the open world. This fluidity also enhances combat, as players’ evasive rolls are quick and can be upgraded to perform a magical dash.

The design for Avalanche’s movement in this game is exceptionally impressive and we hope it won’t stray too far from it in a future installment. Instead, it should build upon these foundations to emphasize one of the lesser-known but powerful aspects of Hogwarts Legacy.
