Fishing has been a staple of the “Trails” series since its inception, with the exception being the first game in the Calvard saga, “Trails Through Daybreak.” However, fishing made a comeback in “Trails Through Daybreak 2.” The mechanics differ depending on the game, but generally, it involves a short mini-game where you manipulate bait around a body of water. Although fishing doesn’t affect the storyline significantly, it offers an enjoyable break for players and here is how it functions in “Trails Through Daybreak 2.”
Fishing in Trails Through Daybreak 2 Explained
In the style often seen in the “Trails” series, you’ll find yourself able to fish quite early in the game’s narrative. Once unlocked, you can fish in any sizeable water body you encounter. Your party members may occasionally point out promising fishing spots too. Remember to carry some fishing bait, or else you won’t catch anything. Although it’s inexpensive, try to acquire dumplings since they increase the chances of catching rare fish. Also, look for upgrades for your fishing rod from vendors as they can make catching fish easier over time.

Before you embark on fishing, utilize the shard search feature to locate potential fishing areas. Remember, it’s not necessary to cast your line from these exact locations to catch fish, but some fish can only be found in those specific spots. When you’re prepared to fish, simply throw out your line and wait for a exclamation point to signal a catch.

As a gamer, when I reach that stage, I’d reel in the virtual fishing line to trigger the mini-game. The objective here is to twist the red arrow until it lands within the glowing part of the circle. Next, I need to keep an eye on the silver arrow outside the circle. Once it moves into the same highlighted area, I press the button. If timed correctly, I’ll earn extra time on the bar on the right side. Filling up this bar means catching the fish successfully. But if I fail three times, sadly, the fish slips away.

In this system, each fish is assigned a different rank based on its length. For instance, if you catch a Sky Gil measuring 11.5 reges, it would be classified as Rank C. However, if you catch one that’s 12.4 reges long, it would be Rank B instead. The higher the fish’s rank, the more substantial the rewards you receive for catching it. For example, a Rank C Snow Crab would only give you one U-Material, while a Rank B would reward you with two U-Materials.
Spending some time fishing in Marchen Garten might appear less exciting than the main story or exploration, but it’s not a poor choice. If you’re after fish that yield U-Material, which is crucial for weapon upgrades, then it’s worth your while. For those chasing achievements, there’s even an accomplishment tied to completing the fishing section in your notebook.
