In March 2016, Nintendo rolled out globally. Two years after that, they extended their rewards program by introducing Gold Points. These points could be earned by purchasing Switch games. For every dollar or euro spent on eligible digital products, customers would receive 5% in Gold Points, while for physical Switch games, the reward was 1%. The advantage of these Gold Points is that they can be redeemed for discounts on digital eShop purchases; each point equals a penny or a cent.

Starting from March 25, 2025, at 12:30 am Eastern Time, Nintendo is set to phase out their Gold Points reward system as part of their loyalty program. They didn’t give specific reasons for this move, but they did offer further insights on how Switch owners might be impacted by this change.

Existing My Nintendo Gold Points Will Remain Usable Up to 2026

Starting from March 25, you won’t be able to accumulate new reward points (Gold Points) through digital purchases or registering newly released physical game cartridges on My Nintendo. However, any existing points tied to your account will still be usable according to the platform’s current rules. Since Gold Points expire 12 months after they are earned and on the last day of the month, some users may still be able to use their points as late as March 31, 2026.

My Nintendo Platinum Points Aren’t Going Anywhere

My Nintendo’s loyalty program isn’t ceasing; instead, it will carry on providing Platinum Points that can be gained through various gaming and app activities without necessitating fans to spend money. Earned points expire in six months but offer perks such as purchasing limited-time merchandise and downloading digital items like wallpapers, among other advantages.

Gold Points are set to cease a week prior to the first Nintendo Direct centered on the Switch 2, raising anticipation for fresh insights about the upcoming console and its services. Some fans have speculated that Nintendo might introduce a new system in place of Gold Points, but the company has yet to provide any concrete evidence of such plans. Furthermore, if the intention was merely to prevent Switch 2 customers from availing discounts using Gold Points, it’s unclear why they would be discontinued for current Switch owners. Instead, Nintendo could have chosen to reclassify them as vouchers exclusively for Switch games, which were recently confirmed to be incompatible with Switch 2 titles, but won’t be discontinued.
