Unfortunately, it doesn’t quite hit this sweet spot initially, but fortunately, it offers a comprehensive settings and accessibility menu to customize it in an old-school manner. Here are the settings I adjusted for a satisfactory balance, all located under the ‘UI’ option when you pause the game:
1. Enable “Objective Tracker” for a minimal hint of where to go next.
2. Turn off “Combat Notifications” to encourage exploration and strategy.
3. Adjust “HUD Layout” to display only essential information.
4. Enable “Radar” for situational awareness, but reduce its visibility for immersion.
5. Customize the keybindings to suit your preferred playstyle.

The Veilguard. However, the ability to turn them off is greatly appreciated. Similarly, I’m glad there’s an option to hide the quest tracker, which can feel like a typical MMO guide telling you what to do next and cluttering the screen. I don’t need constant reminders of my quest objectives because I can remember them without needing to constantly refer to the journal.
As a gamer, I found interaction icons to be quite useful in my playthrough, as they indicated breakable crates and environmental obstacles that my companions could clear out. However, I wish I had figured out earlier how to turn them off, as it made the gameplay smoother for me. Fortunately, Avowed provides a handy compass that still points towards the direction of my active quest objective, so I never felt lost even with those floating waypoints disabled. If one prefers a more challenging experience, they might choose to disable the compass entirely, but I found that to be a bit excessive and ended up using the area map more frequently than I’d prefer.
In modern settings menus, I appreciate the balance between detailed interfaces and intuitive navigation options – it caters to those who prefer traditional, immersive challenges akin to games like Thief, while also being accessible for those who might not enjoy such complexity. Regrettably, I wish Deathloop had allowed me to explore its exceptional level design without constant guidance; I wouldn’t want someone’s initial encounter with Avowed to be hindered by similar hand-holding.
