To mark the 25th anniversary of the popular video game franchise, The Sims, Electronic Arts (EA) and Maxis have been unveiling a wealth of content over the past two months. Some of the standout features include a 25-hour live stream, the announcement of three new Kits, a new Expansion Pack, but what truly stole the show was the reintroduction of The Sims and The Sims 2. Despite some bugs in the relaunch, it has been generally successful. Interestingly, if the remake of these classic games continues to perform well, there’s a possibility that The Sims 3 might follow suit in the future.
Starting January 31st, I was thrilled to learn that I could digitally acquire both of these iconic games – The Sims and The Sims 2! For those who wish to purchase them separately, you can do so, but a special bundle called The Sims: 25th Birthday Bundle, which includes both games, is also up for grabs. As we speak, all three options are available on the EA store. The individual prices stand at $19.99 for The Sims, $29.99 for The Sims 2, and $39.99 for the bundle, offering you an excellent value for your gaming dollar!
Why The Sims 3 Should Get its Own Spotlight
As a passionate moviegoer reminiscing about my childhood, I can’t help but notice that EA and Maxis are re-releasing some of their classic hits due to their timeless appeal and the nostalgia they evoke. With the current surge in fondness for media from the early 2000s, both The Sims and The Sims 2 find themselves at the forefront of this golden era. Furthermore, EA and Maxis have cleverly incorporated elements from their previous titles into The Sims 4, such as the Blast from the Past Event, which adds a touch of nostalgia for veteran players. This strategic move aims to intrigue new gamers who may not have experienced The Sims or The Sims 2, potentially drawing them into these iconic games.
Giving “The Sims 3” a chance to shine again is not just reasonable, but could potentially bring significant success to EA and Maxis. Unlike its predecessors, “The Sims 3” boasts a more active player base, and even received an update in January to run smoother on modern computers. However, since the year before “The Sims 4” was released, there has been no new content officially released by EA and Maxis for “The Sims 3”. The game’s dedicated player base and modding community have kept the game alive, but official updates from the original creators are long overdue.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast might say, there’s a potential spanner that could complicate the re-release of the classic game, The Sims 3. Unlike its predecessors, The Sims and The Sims 2, which were discontinued on EA’s store and Steam before January 31, The Sims 3 has managed to stay in circulation, available for digital purchase at $19.99. Yet, there’s a chance for a Legacy Edition of The Sims 3 if EA and Maxis make the right moves.
How The Sims 3: Legacy Edition Could Happen
For The Sims 3, similar to other games in The Sims series, additional content like Expansion and Stuff Packs can be bought. However, the store for The Sims 3 was a subject of debate among players, where they could purchase new Build & Buy and Create-A-Sim (CAS) items using the game’s premium currency, SimPoints. Remarkably, the store for this game, released in 2009, is still operational. If Electronic Arts (EA) and Maxis were to release a Legacy Edition of The Sims 3, they could potentially include some exclusive items from the store as a bonus. Choosing popular items might help level the playing field for those who couldn’t initially buy items from the store.
Another approach for offering The Sims 3: Legacy Edition could involve combining Downloadable Content (DLC) with the main game. EA and Maxis have executed this strategy previously with The Sims 3 Starter Pack, which offered the base game, The Sims 3: Late Night, and The Sims 3: High End Loft Stuff. However, one Expansion Pack and one Stuff Pack do not equate to a particularly extensive compilation. Instead, the hypothetical Legacy Edition of The Sims 3 might comprise more indispensable Expansion Packs such as Generations, Pets, and Seasons. Integrating these essential expansions along with the base game would resemble the re-releases of both The Sims and The Sims 2, enticing players to purchase the older title. With the The Sims franchise’s 25th anniversary approaching, there may be a possibility that The Sims 3 will ultimately receive its own Legacy Edition when the series turns thirty.
