Approximately six years following the debut of “Borderlands 3” and three years after “Tiny Tina’s Wonderland,” Gearbox Software and 2K Games are gearing up for the release of “Borderlands 4” this year. The upcoming installment in the humorous loot-shooter series will continue from where “Borderlands 3” ended, offering players four entirely new vault hunters to select. Contrary to expectations, it seems that “Borderlands 4” intends to take on a more mature tone compared to earlier games in the franchise; however, recent previews suggest that its combat will still deliver the anarchy fans have grown accustomed to from this series.
As a diehard fan, I’ve been thrilled to see not one, but two enticing gameplay trailers for the upcoming Borderlands 4! These previews have beautifully demonstrated how the series has grown since Borderlands 3, introducing fresh animations, novel enemy types, exhilarating action skills, and innovative traversal mechanics. The anticipation among fans is palpable. If Borderlands 4 aims to outshine its predecessor, it could learn a thing or two from a Borderlands spin-off game.
Why the New Weapon Type in Tiny Tina’s Wonderland Shouldn’t Be Forgotten
2022 saw the launch of “Tiny Tina’s Wonderland” by Gearbox, nestled between their primary releases. This game is inspired by an in-game tabletop version of “Dungeons and Dragons,” which was first presented in “Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep,” a DLC expansion for “Borderlands 2.” In essence, “Tiny Tina’s Wonderland” transfers the action and wit from the “Borderlands” universe into a fantasy world designed by the explosives expert character, Tiny Tina. Though it’s a spin-off from the main series, it offers some intriguing twists to the “Borderlands” gameplay format.
The Introduction of Melee Weapons
One significant new feature introduced in Tiny Tina’s Wonderland is the inclusion of customizable melee weapons. While melee attacks have been a part of the Borderlands series, this game marks the debut where players can select and wield their preferred melee weapon.
In this game, similar to how players can obtain and buy various firearms, they can also gather and purchase melee weapons that come in different categories and rarities. These categories encompass one-handed swords, two-handed swords, axes, and blunt items such as hammers or morning stars. Each melee weapon possesses distinctive traits, influencing its critical hit chance, attack speed, and type of elemental damage. The selected class in Wonderlands can significantly affect combat outcomes, with the chosen melee weapon potentially being just as influential as the player’s firearms.
Bringing Melee Weapons to Borderlands 4
In the game Tiny Tina’s Wonderland, the close-quarter fights were relatively straightforward, but they offered a distinct touch that made it stand apart. The fighting system was inspired by medieval fantasy, yet it could potentially return in Borderlands 4. The Borderlands series has always encouraged players to engage their enemies personally, thanks to characters like Krieg, Athena, and Amara who possess formidable melee skills. If Borderlands 4 were to incorporate these abilities and allow players to choose a special melee weapon whose stats and damage type complement their preferred skill tree, it would add an appealing layer of depth and appeal to the game’s melee combat. Moreover, with the anticipated mobility improvements in Borderlands 4, moving into and away from melee fights with enemies will be smoother than ever before.
