On February 18th, the detailed unveiling of the collaboration between Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy was presented. Pre-orders for the impending crossover set, which encompasses the Final Fantasy Starter Kit and booster packs, are now open before its scheduled release on June 13th.

Initially unveiled in October 2024, the Magic: The Gathering (MTG) and Final Fantasy crossover was introduced as part of MTG’s “Universes Beyond” booster series. This series has also incorporated crossovers from franchises such as Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed and Marvel’s Spider-Man. Unlike other Universes Beyond boosters, the Final Fantasy set is officially recognized for standard play within MTG’s rule system, making it the 105th overall expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set will feature over 100 legendary creature cards, with 55 of them having borderless designs.

Fans of “Magic: The Gathering” and “Final Fantasy” won’t have to wait too long anymore, as preorders for the new expansion’s cards are already live! You can now secure your sets, whether it’s Commander Decks, boosters, or collectible boxes, on Amazon or at local card stores that carry “Magic: The Gathering” products. The release date is set for June 13.

Magic: The Gathering Shares More Final Fantasy Crossover Details

The four “Commander Decks” inspired by the iconic “Final Fantasy” franchise showcase characters from its most beloved mainline games such as Cloud Strife (from “Final Fantasy 7”) and Tidus (“Final Fantasy 10”). Notably, two prominent female characters from the series, Terra Branford (“Final Fantasy 6”) and Y’shtola Rhul (“Final Fantasy 14”), are included in this lineup. Additionally, artwork by renowned “Final Fantasy” artists like Yoshitaka Amano and Tetsuya Nomura is featured on the cards, as well as contributions from other talented artists.

Cards in the “Final Fantasy” collection have a unique feature: they can change into stronger versions when specific conditions are fulfilled. For instance, Emet-Selch from “Final Fantasy 14” transforms into Hades if the player has at least 14 cards discarded (in the graveyard). A fresh card type called Saga Creatures merges the Saga mechanic with a creature card that unleashes powerful attacks once it collects a lore counter. Iconic “Final Fantasy” Summons like Shiva are categorized as Saga Creatures, and can significantly shift the outcome of a game.

A beginner’s kit for the role-playing game, “Final Fantasy,” comes equipped with two pre-constructed decks, showcasing characters from “Final Fantasy 7” – Cloud and Sephiroth. This is an ideal starting point for novice players diving into the world of “Magic: The Gathering.” However, the number of characters from “Final Fantasy” that will be included in the complete set remains uncertain.
