In the game currently, Overwatch 2 has launched Season 15, introducing Perks, Loot Boxes, and a refresh for Competitive Play this year. The initial major update of Overwatch 2 in 2025 is now active!
More recently, Overwatch 2 has unveiled a Spotlight event hinting at significant changes planned for 2025. Goodies and Loot Boxes are on the agenda for Season 15, followed by the introduction of a new Damage-Per-Second (DPS) hero named Freya and the Stadium game mode in Season 16. Additionally, expect more maps and additional features to be rolled out in future updates for Overwatch 2.
As an excited fan, I’m thrilled to announce that the initial set of features for Overwatch 2 has finally dropped! We’re diving into Season 15, aptly named Honor and Glory, where a slew of modifications and enhancements are underway. The majority of these updates revolve around Perks, a fresh level-up system that’s now integrated across all game modes for every one of the 42 heroes.
Each Overwatch 2 character boasts four Perks to pick from – two minor ones and two major ones – adding up to a whopping 168 unique Perks, a number destined to grow as more characters are introduced. Intriguingly, there aren’t any other balance changes in this patch; Overwatch 2 developers are eagerly observing the impact of Perks on the game’s metagame before deciding on any buffs or nerfs.
In Season 15 of Overwatch 2, Loot Boxes make a comeback! Unlike the ones from Overwatch 1 that could be bought directly, you can now get three Loot Boxes per week by playing 27 games (with wins counting for two). You can also earn them through the Battle Pass and in-game events like Perked Up, which runs throughout the season. With over 100 Loot Boxes up for grabs in Season 15, fans are encouraged to gather as many as they can!
The rankings of abilities have been restored, marking the commencement of a fresh year for advancements. Players will now gather Competitive Points that can later be traded for freshly introduced Cosmic Firearms and 2025 season weapon decorations. Please note that the Clash mode will no longer appear in the competitive play of Overwatch 2, as it has shown to be too erratic for high-stakes confrontations.
Absolutely, every season for Overwatch 2 wouldn’t feel whole without a fresh Battle Pass! In the free version, players can unveil Suanni Mei and Sindri Torbjorn, while those who opt for the Premium version will receive Rainy Day Kiriko, Bi’an Orisa, Goumang Hanzo, Toxic Venture, Cyber Enforcer Zarya, and Tianma Lucio. Along the way, you’ll find yourself rewarded with Loot Boxes, Overwatch Coins and Credits, and Mythic Prisms to unlock the Pixiu Zenyatta Mythic Skin as well. As a gamer, I can’t wait for Season 15 in Overwatch 2! This new feature called Perks is going to revolutionize gameplay by allowing us to unlock mid-match hero upgrades. Now we have even more options and strategies at our fingertips! With the start of the 2025 Competitive Year, there are amazing rewards on the horizon like Galactic Weapon Skins and exclusive charms for those who rise through the ranks. Not only that, but participating in the Perked Up event’s weekly challenges will offer thrilling prizes such as Rainy Day Mercy and Legendary Loot Boxes. And let me tell you, Mythic Pixiu Zenyatta and other fantastic additions are just a taste of what Overwatch 2 has in store for its most exhilarating season yet!
New Mythic Skin – Pixiu Zenyatta
Drawing inspiration from the legendary golden dragon Pixiu, the Mythic Zenyatta skin named Pixiu showcases a blend of divine elegance and unique personalizations. This skin adapts along with your growth, boasting four stages of progression, thematic audio cues, and an additional Gilded Aspect for unmatched dominance on the battlefield, embodying true regal grandeur.
Loot Boxes Are Back
Prepare yourself for the comeback of Loot Crates, brimming with goodies and surprises to enhance your inventory and fuel excitement! Whether you’re a fresh recruit or an experienced warrior, the anticipation of opening Loot Crates to discover new content while advancing through the Premium Battle Pass or earning them as weekly milestones are met will captivate you! There will be two categories of Loot Crates available for you to acquire: Regular Loot Crates and Epic/Legendary Loot Crates.
- Starting in Season 15, you can earn up to three Loot Boxes every week by completing up to 27 games each week with wins counting as double.
- Starting in Season 15, you can earn a free Legendary Loot Box in the free track of the Battle Pass and an additional two Legendary Loot Boxes in the Premium Track of the Battle Pass.
Loot Box
- Every Loot Box draws from a curated collection of Overwatch and Overwatch 2 cosmetic items.
- Each box will drop four items when opened. The items you get are now randomly selected at the time of box opening.
- Loot Boxes will prioritize giving you items you don’t already own.
- If a Loot Box can’t avoid giving you any items you already own, the loot box will instead grant progress towards a bonus Loot Box.
- At the start of each season, any unopened boxes from previous seasons will be automatically opened and all items dropped from them are added to your collection.

On average, each rarity has the following chances of dropping per one Loot Box opened.

Guaranteed Drops
- A Legendary item is guaranteed to drop within 20 consecutive box openings.

Each Legendary Loot Box is guaranteed to contain at least one Legendary item.

Skill Rank Reset
- The highest Ranks (Master, Grandmaster, and Champion) have been tuned to include a higher percentage of the player population once players are well calibrated.
- Given the addition of Perks and the tuning of higher Tiers, this reset is designed to put players on an even playing field and give them a chance to climb even higher than ever before.
- All ranks in Role Queue and Open Queue in Competitive Play have been reset to Unranked and all players will need to complete their respective 10 placement matches for each role.
Competitive Rewards
- Galactic Weapon Variants can now be unlocked with Competitive Points, allowing you to reach for the stars while you rank up.
- Jade Weapon Variants join Gold Weapon Variants as Legacy Rewards.
- Legacy Rewards can be purchased with Legacy Competitive Points.
- Competitive Weapon Charms will be awarded to players in Platinum and above in Season 16 based on your performance in Season 15.
- End-of-season titles for Competitive Role Queue now include the role the rank was achieved in. Examples include Champion Tank, Champion Support, Champion Damage, and Open Queue Champion.
Competitive Point Conversion
- All Competitive Points earned in the 2024 Competitive Year have been converted into Legacy Competitive Points.
- Competitive Points can now be manually converted into Legacy Competitive Points when purchasing Weapon Variants.
Ranks on Portraits
- Competitive Hero Portraits return to Competitive Play with Overwatch 2’s Rank icons, giving players that share their gameplay new opportunities to show off their skill.
Map Pool
- Clash Maps Hanaoka and Throne of Anubis are removed from the Competitive Play pool.
- All players can still play on all Escort, Hybrid, Control, Push, and Flashpoint maps.
General Updates
Voice Lines
- Refactored ultimate voice lines to allow custom player-specific voice lines instead also being heard by opponents.
- Mode-specific ultimate lines are now enabled to play game-wide for players with relevant skins equipped (ex. Warlock Ashe, Greek Gods skins, etc).
- Custom ultimate lines are now enabled for several Mythic skins, with more to come in future patches.
- Previously unused custom ultimate lines are now available for several other skins.
In the transition to Overwatch 2, we considered the feedback from players that certain character skins causing specific ultimate lines from enemy heroes caused challenges in gameplay for many. Consequently, we only allowed custom hostile ultimate voice-overs in specific game modes, but unfortunately, they couldn’t be integrated into the main game.
By altering how unique voice lines for ultimate abilities are activated, we’ve made it possible to play personalized, player-specific phrases without influencing what other players (enemies) hear. This upgrade offers us greater versatility when modifying ultimate voice lines in the future.
Emotes
- Emotes can now be cancelled mid-animation shortly after they are activated.
Introducing Perks
Enhance your gaming experience by utilizing Perks – Overwatch 2’s innovative mid-match upgrade system available for Quickplay and Competitive modes. As the excitement builds, unlock and select impactful abilities that boost your hero’s strength and allow you to adapt your strategy on the fly during gameplay. Respond effectively to each challenge, outmaneuver your opponents, and shift the momentum of battle in your favor.
- Perks are now enabled in Quick Play and Competitive modes.
How to gain Perk progress
The advancement in your Perk level happens as you inflict damage, achieve kills, and assist in healing your teammates during the game. As time passes, the speed at which you accumulate Perks will continually rise. Additionally, defeating an enemy who is at a higher Perk level than yourself yields extra Perk progress.
Swapping Heroes
- When you swap heroes, your new hero will be set to level 1 with zero perk progress.
- Your progress will be saved on any heroes that you play throughout the round though. So, if you played Tracer to Level 3 and got her Major Perk, when you switch back to Tracer you will be at Level 3 with your perks equipped.
Selecting Perks
There are multiple options available to select your perks into fit your personal play style.
- Standard Selection: Hold down Left Alt on keyboard or up on the directional pad for controller, then aim at the left or right perk or press your shoulder buttons on controller to select.
- Quick Selection: You can also set your own bindings to select your perks without bringing up the Perk selection user interface, which is great for once you’ve really gotten your perks down and don’t need the menu.
- You can also bind your perk selection to be a toggle instead of holding by default.
Celebrate In Our Perked-Up Event
Delight in the launch of Overwatch 2’s revolutionary Perks system during the Perked Up Event, which lasts throughout the entire season! Complete challenges every week for exciting rewards such as up to 10 Loot Boxes each week and Rainy Day Mercy! Connect with the community through Twitch Drops and Support a Streamer to acquire Rainy Day Mei and Tracer. This special event takes place from February 18th to April 22nd.
- For season 15 only, players can earn up to an additional 10 loot boxes each week by completing up to 15 games with wins counting as double.
- Challenges for Loot Boxes reset every week, so any loot boxes not earned in that week are missed out.

Instead of making balance updates for heroes in Season 15, we’re introducing Hero Perks for all 42 characters. This is aimed at providing you with ample time to adjust to this significant change within the game. We’ll be keeping a close eye on these perks to determine if any require immediate adjustments.
