2015 saw the launch of Dying Light, which was met with incredible acclaim and delight, providing an exceptional blend of zombie-slaying action and intricate parkour features. A decade later, Dying Light continues to be one of the most beloved open-world zombie games, and in 2022, Techland expanded the franchise with Dying Light 2: Stay Human.
Prior to the release of Dying Light in 2015, Techland advertised an extremely expensive collector’s edition, dubbed the ‘My Apocalypse Edition’. This unique, one-of-a-kind version of Dying Light carried a hefty price tag of $386,000. As we celebrate the game’s tenth anniversary, I got in touch with Techland to find out what happened to this special edition.
Never Seen Again
In the course of my experience, I’ve come across some rather lavish collectors’ editions. These usually include figurines, illustrated books, prints, and accessories thematically linked to the game you’re buying.
The ‘My Apocalypse Edition’ for 2015’s Dying Light went about ten steps further than that.
If you’ve got $386,000 to spare, the My Apocalypse Edition of Dying Light offers a remarkable package deal. Not only will your likeness be featured in the game, but you’ll also receive a life-size ‘Volatile’ statue and have the opportunity for parkour training with a professional freerunning team. To sweeten the deal, it comes equipped with night vision goggles, an all-inclusive round trip to Techland’s headquarters, and four autographed copies of the game.
Oh, and it also came with a custom-built, ‘zombie-proof’ survival shelter.
Despite the game’s release fading into the past, I remain one of the few who still remember the My Apocalypse Edition of Dying Light.
I’ve just contacted Techland about the status of the expensive collector’s edition I purchased. In no time, I received an email from Paulina Dziedziak, who is the Public Relations Manager at Techland. Here’s her response:
The publicity event was more about creating hype rather than genuine interest in the game’s launch. It certainly managed to grab headlines due to its extravagant and attention-grabbing style. While it effectively put the game on everyone’s radar, unfortunately, no one ended up buying it – which, I suppose, is a good thing in hindsight!
Without the addition of the zombie survival shelter, the My Apocalypse Edition might have seemed plausible. To make it even more convincing, reducing the price tag by a few zeroes would have been beneficial as well.
