In the realm of dating sim games, the upcoming title “Date Everything” is carving out unique territory for itself in numerous aspects: its innovative concept of anthropomorphized household items, the availability of multiple storylines (love, friendship, and even hate) for each character, and an astounding roster of 100 characters that the protagonist can pursue. For any ardent romance enthusiast, “Date Everything” promises to be a dream come true.
As a fervent fan, I had the pleasure of learning, straight from the creators themselves during an engaging chat with Game Rant, how Ray Chase, Robbie Daymond, and Amanda Hufford, talented developers behind the game “Date Everything,” decided on the number of dateable characters and shared their experiences dealing with the intricate challenges that came with handling such a vast array of potential romantic interests. It’s important to mention that each of these brilliant minds also lends their voices to some in-game characters, bringing the story to life even more.
Date Everything Was Always Going To Feature 100 Characters
Right from the get-go when they conceptualized Date Everything, the Sassy Chap Games crew had their sights set high. Daymond, one of the co-founders alongside Chase and Max Mittelman, shared that the team aimed for 100 characters from the start. As he put it, “It was always a hundred, and we stood firm on that decision.” Chase echoed this sentiment, stating that the number 100 was chosen due to its memorable quality and the challenge it presented.
Initially, committing to a game with a 100-character limit proved challenging in my quest for a publisher. Eventually, I found the right match with Team17. As Daymond put it, the journey wasn’t always easy, but the end result was worth it.
On that occasion, we firmly planted our feet deep into the sand. Earlier proposals didn’t sit well with us, as many requested concessions. They suggested, ‘This is too much. Can you lower it to 25? Can you go down to 50?’ To which I responded, somewhat evasively, “I’m not certain.
The Date Everything Team Actually Scaled Down To 100 Characters, Not Up
Finding a hundred unique, dateable items might appear as an arduous task, but contrary to what it seems, the team’s struggles were more about narrowing their options rather than expanding them. As they surveyed their homes, they initially brainstormed numerous hundreds of items that could be transformed into dateable characters. At a certain point, they amassed almost 500 ideas. “The most challenging part was reducing this list,” Chase admitted.
The team finally agreed on a method to maintain 100 items by grouping all identical items under one character. For instance, every window in the house is represented as the same character, as are all lamps and curtains. A notable illustration of this concept is Dorian the Door, voiced by Ben Starr from Final Fantasy 16. The house has no less than seventeen doors, and each one is a variant of Dorian. Different sprites distinguish some characters, while voice actor Ben Starr employs varying tones to make the doors appear distinct yet related.
A duo like Curt and Rod, voiced by David Morales and Jacquis Neal, symbolize curtains in this scenario. According to Daymond, their dialogue is affected by the specific window they are positioned at and the view beyond it.
The conversations you have with them are influenced by what they perceive in their surroundings. For instance, if you talk to them in the backyard, they might react based on events happening there, rather than in the front yard or side area.
In the end, the game titled “Date Everything” is set to launch in June 2025, boasting a complete lineup of 100 characters. Gamers will have the opportunity to pursue Romance, Friendship, or Enmity with each character, creating multiple endings and ensuring an engaging experience for players who enjoy completing tasks. The creators at Sassy Chap had always envisioned a cast of 100 dateable items, and they’ve successfully brought that idea to life in “Date Everything”.
