One Piece’s Thousand Sunny Deserves More Emotional Depth – Is It Time for a Major Storyline?

Summary

  • The Going Merry is cherished by fans and had emotional connections with the crew.
  • The Thousand Sunny lacks emotional storytelling and feels underutilized.
  • The Thousand Sunny may have potential for a significant storyline if given more emotional depth.

In the storyline of One Piece, the pirate ship plays an indispensable role, particularly for the Straw Hat crew. Unlike any other team, the Straw Hats seem to share an unusually close bond with their ship. From the heart-wrenching saga of the crew and the Going Merry in One Piece, to the spectacular and imaginative Thousand Sunny, the Straw Hat ships have been a captivating aspect of the series thus far.

Regardless of its significance within the series, the Thousand Sunny appears to have a limited role thus far, often serving merely as transportation for the crew rather than being fully integrated into the storyline, much like how the Going Merry was almost considered part of the Straw Hat Crew in One Piece. In recent chapters of One Piece, particularly, the Thousand Sunny seems to be underused compared to its potential.

The Going Merry Is One Of The Most Important Aspects Of One Piece

The Thousand Sunny Didn’t Fill The Void

Among the beloved characters in the One Piece series is the Straw Hat Crew’s initial vessel, the Going Merry. This ship not only served as a means of transport for the crew during their early adventures but also functioned as a character itself, embodying the essence of a mystical creature known as a Klabautermann. The bond between Usopp and the ship, along with its determination to safeguard the crew, added depth and emotional resonance to the storyline. One of the most poignant moments in the series undeniably is the demise of the Going Merry.

A strong ship as bright as the sun that can cheerfully overcome a thousand seas…

Following the demise of the Going Merry, the crew found themselves in need of a new vessel. Fortunately, Franky stepped up to assist them by crafting his masterpiece; the Thousand Sunny. This ship was significantly larger than the humble Going Merry and boasted numerous concealed attributes and technology, making it one of the most sophisticated ships within the series to date. From then on, the Thousand Sunny became the primary ship for the Straw Hat Crew, and is likely to remain so until the conclusion of the One Piece series.

The Thousand Sunny Lacks Emotional Storytelling

The Ship Doesn’t Feel As Close To The Crew

  • The Thousand Sunny Needs More Emotional Connections
  • The Going Merry Felt Closer To The Crew

Although the Thousand Sunny boasts numerous impressive features and significantly bolsters the team, it seems devoid of the emotional narrative that the Going Merry possessed. At present, the Sunny appears more like a display of Franky’s shipbuilding prowess and a means of transportation for the crew, rather than something deeper. Currently, while the Straw Hat Pirates are protective of the Sunny, they don’t seem as emotionally attached to it collectively, beyond Franky, compared to their previous ship.

It appears that in One Piece, the Thousand Sunny hasn’t quite reached the emotional significance for the crew that the Going Merry did. Despite their separation from the Sunny during the 2-year timeskip, the crew seemed relatively unbothered about leaving it unattended. Given that the Thousand Sunny has been around for a longer period than the Going Merry at this stage, there could have been an engaging narrative focusing on the ship to make it more relatable and emotionally impactful.

There’s Potential For The Sunny To Have An Emotional Storyline

Franky Could Have A Moment With The Ship Before The End Of One Piece

Given Franky’s bond with the Thousand Sunny and his ambition to sail around the Grand Line, there seems to be a possibility that the Sunny might face a trial similar to what the Going Merry endured previously. Inflicting significant damage on the Sunny or creating an emotionally intense moment for Franky involving the ship could foster a strong connection with fans comparable to their attachment to the Merry. However, due to the fast-paced nature of One Piece, it’s challenging to find opportunities for such smaller moments focusing on the ship amidst the numerous events unfolding.

There’s no crime in living! – Franky

Even though it might be near the end of “One Piece,” there’s still a chance for the Thousand Sunny to have a significant moment. For now, however, it appears to be more active compared to the Going Merry. Given its significance within the Straw Hat Crew and Franky’s background, it seems fitting that the Thousand Sunny should play a larger role in “One Piece.
