Unlock Smooth Gameplay: Fix Stuttering in Avowed on PC Now!

Avowed is a spiritual sequel to Obsidian Entertainment’s CRPG series, Pillars of Eternity. This mid-sized RPG takes place in the same universe and presents an extensive world, which can be quite challenging for your PC. Just like any large game, it’s advisable to adjust the graphics settings to optimize your gaming experience, particularly if you encounter any performance issues.

I regret to say that in certain computers, Avowed suffers from a significant stammering problem. This issue is more noticeable than it sounds; as you journey through the game world, you’ll encounter brief pauses that accumulate, negatively impacting what could be a seamless experience. Those who have compared low frame rates to high frame rates will recognize these stutters under poor performance, while smooth performance offers a much more engaging and immersive experience. Fortunately, there are ways to enhance the situation.

Best Settings To Reduce Stuttering

Different PCs Need Different Solutions

Based on your PC’s capabilities and settings, the game “Avowed” may encounter minor to significant stuttering problems. To resolve or improve these issues, you might consider several approaches, but generally speaking, a more powerful PC will offer a smoother experience. Let me outline one crucial step: Ensure that your graphics drivers are current by visiting the NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel official websites. Each manufacturer provides driver optimizations tailored for “Avowed”.

Sean Migalla, our writer, offered some insights based on his lengthy gaming sessions of the game “Avowed” using an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX processor and a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 graphics card.

At first, I found Avowed visually underwhelming and performance-wise unsatisfactory on my Alienware m17; there was persistent texture popping and the game lagged, particularly when entering areas filled with new assets such as a city. Lowering the graphics settings didn’t seem to alleviate the issue much. However, what ultimately resolved the problem was disabling upscaling in the graphics settings menu. Once I made that change, I no longer encountered texture popping and the game ran smoothly even when I increased the graphics to Epic, a setting where it previously struggled at High and Medium.

If the current setting doesn’t improve performance, you might want to consider turning off Raytracing in the Graphics Options. Although the game Avowed doesn’t have a fully open world, it is quite extensive, which can make graphically demanding settings like this particularly challenging. If it fails to produce the desired outcome and your frame rate remains acceptable with it activated, feel free to reactivate the setting. However, when used in conjunction with scaling back overall graphics settings to Medium, it seemed to help my colleague (who is using an RTX 3080 and 5700X3D setup) significantly. Although the gameplay isn’t flawless yet, it becomes playable enough to continue enjoying.

What Causes Stuttering?

Unreal Engine’s Common Issue

Unfortunately, stuttering has become a common issue among games that use Unreal Engine. For all its great advancements, this one still plagues gamers. Much of the time, stuttering is caused by shader-related features (or rather, a lack of shader optimization). This is likely why disabling Raytracing can be a strong start to fixing the issue, or at least reducing its severity. Overall, Avowed has reviewed well as a smartly designed, tight experience. Most of its issues are technical and can be fixed or alleviated with relative ease by using our tips, and some old-fashioned trial and error.
