This week, the ex-head of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) Worldwide Studios disclosed in an interview that he managed to play the now-abandoned version of “The Last of Us: Online”.
Also Known as Factions, The Multiplayer Spin-Off Was Finally Canceled In 2023
For those who may not have been following the news closely, Naughty Dog initially discussed The Last of Us Online/Factions as far back as E3 2018. At that time, it was intended to be the multiplayer aspect of the then-upcoming The Last of Us Part 2.
Eventually, Naughty Dog decided to remove the multiplayer feature from The Last of Us Part 2, with plans to launch it as a standalone multiplayer game under a separate title.
During the advancement of the project related to the title, Bungie Studios was enlisted to evaluate the current state and scale of The Last of Us Online. With a history that includes both triumph and setback in their live-service projects, such as Destiny, Bungie reportedly expressed worry about whether TLOUO could effectively maintain player interest and long-term participation.
The game was canceled shortly after, leaving players to ponder about what could have been.
Former SIE President Shuhei Yoshida Was Able To Play The Game For Himself.
In the interview, Yoshida claims that he “played the game, and it was great,” adding:
Bungie shared insights about creating live-service games, which led Naughty Dog to understand that such a project would conflict with the development of their title, “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet”. Essentially, they recognized that taking on live-service game creation would prevent them from working on this project. This could be seen as a miscalculation in planning.
Opting for a shift in priorities, Naughty Dog decided to concentrate more on their upcoming standalone title, “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet,” overseeing development of their live-service multiplayer adaptation of “The Last of Us” for now.
Yoshida underscores the importance of giving PlayStation’s in-house studios the ultimate decision-making power when it comes to creating a game with a live service model.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed that creating live-service games has become quite standard among game studios up until now. However, it seems like quite a few of these titles are struggling at their launch or getting shelved before they even see the light of day.

In his words, “Based on what I’ve observed, if a company presents a significant project idea, it increases the chances of that project being accepted and backed by studios. It’s not that Hermen Hulst, who leads PlayStation Studios, is mandating teams to create live service games; rather, it seems like a mutual understanding or agreement.
It’s yet uncertain how each of Sony’s ten ongoing live-service projects will fare for the individual studios involved.
