Summary

  • House of the Dragon season 3 will open with the Battle in the Gullet, featuring four dragons.
  • The naval battle holds strategic importance as Rhaenyra aims to cut off supplies to King’s Landing.
  • HBO decided to delay the battle for high production value and to build suspense for a new narrative.

Interest in “The Gullet’s Standoff” (or “The Battle of the Gullet”) has been growing ever since Francesca Orsi, Head of Drama Series and Films at HBO, mentioned it during an interview with Deadline at the premiere of The White Lotus Season 3. It is now officially revealed that this grand naval battle will set the stage for Season 3, with four dragons belonging to the Blacks expected to join the fight. With House of the Dragon aiming to meet its audience’s anticipations, it should deliver, given how its predecessor, Game of Thrones, made waves in modern television by pushing boundaries in terms of scale, visual grandeur, and emotional depth with battles like Hardhome, the Battle of the Bastards, and the Battle of Winterfell.

As a passionate cinephile, earlier I found myself expressing my concerns over the incorporation of some gimmicky adjustments in the original material of “House of the Dragon,” and the leisurely pace at which the narrative unfolded. However, I had high hopes that the grand naval battle in the Gullet would grace our screens in the season 2 finale. Sadly, this wasn’t the case, but I understand the reasoning behind it. The Battle in the Gullet was postponed due to a blend of factors.

House of the Dragon Season 3 Premiere Is All About The Gullet

The Gullet serves as a critical maritime passage for supplies heading to King’s Landing, and Rhaenyra vigilantly guards this area. Her naval forces and dragonriders continuously patrol Blackwater Bay and the Gullet, aiming to blockade food and resources from reaching King’s Landing. This military tactic of sealing off sea trade routes has left Blackwater Bay isolated from the Narrow Sea, causing hardship for King’s Landing. The common people endure the brunt of the struggle as tension rises, but Rhaenyra attempts to win favor by sending aid shipments.

Because the Gullet plays a crucial role in shipping lanes and commerce, it carries immense political and strategic weight in today’s world. Rhaenyra’s forces hold the islands of Dragonstone and Driftmark nearby. To offset her influence, Prince Regent Aemond Targaryen forges an alliance with Lord Tyland Lannister who represents the Triarchy beyond the Narrow Sea. This move by the Greens is aimed at inviting foreign forces, enemies that Rhaenyron’s Velaryons and Daemon Targaryen had clashed with earlier over the vital Stepstones.

Here is another way of expressing that sentence:

“Ser Tyland, I also need your assistance. We are planning to form an alliance with the Triarchy. The ongoing blockade has become too much of a burden for us.

The Small Council advises Aemond against inviting foreigners near the capital city, but he disregards their advice, stating that he will handle the Triarchy as he awaits the arrival of the Lannister and Hightower fleets. Subsequently, Tyland Lannister approaches the powerful commander of the Triarchy’s naval fleet, Sharako Lohar, seeking support. Eventually, they set sail towards the Gullet.

HBO’s Decision To Hold Off The Battle in the Gullet

In the final episode of “House of the Dragon,” Sharako Lohar consented to voyage alongside Tyland, while the Velaryon fleet remained vigilant. Given their importance, the show deliberately slowed down and emphasized these events to build anticipation for the Battle of the Gullet. HBO’s executive Orsi noted that this battle necessitated a high level of production quality.

I’m really pleased that we were patient, as it’s going to surpass all expectations. It’s truly colossal in scale, and the extra time allowed us to construct it properly.

In terms of the technical know-how, Orsi said:

Kevin de la Noy, one of the key producers, has experience from working on the Titanic. This means he can share his insights about the events on the Titanic and the way its story was constructed, contributing valuable expertise to the project.

A significant amount of effort has been put into creating this crucial conflict, aiming to loosen the Sea Snake’s control over the oceans. This required both time and careful consideration. However, reducing the second season from 10 episodes to 8 made it challenging to fully portray the story within the given deadline.

The Battle in the Gullet Will Forge A New Narrative

The Dance of the Dragons Spirals Into Chaos

During the surprise attack by the Triarchy known as the Gay Abandon, Prince Aegon manages to slip away on his dragon Stormcloud, flying off to share the news of the ambush with Dragonstone. This triggers Jace’s call for action. Tragically, Jace and his dragon Vermax do not survive the battle, while Queen Rhaenyra suffers a heavy loss as her son Prince Viserys is caught in the ambush. Viserys is captured and raised in Lys under the supervision of Magister Bambarro Bazanne. However, due to misinformation, the Blacks wrongly assume that Viserys has perished.

The advantage shifts towards the Green faction as they gain control over the small fortresses in Crownlands and manage to break the blockade, outmaneuvering the Blacks temporarily. Meanwhile, the Sea Snake’s dominance as a maritime ruler will likely suffer a significant blow. According to historical records, the Triarchy may experience losses in both soldiers and ships during this conflict. Essentially, we are witnessing a four-dragon battle unfold, with the Velaryon fleet clashing against the Triarchy at sea.

The new dragons expected to join Prince Jacaerys and Vermax are:

Hugh Hammer riding on Vermithor, whom he won in the Sowing of the Seeds, selected Seasmoke, chosen by Addam of Hull; Ulf claimed Silverwing; and finally, Rhaena, standing in for Nettles, pursues the untamed dragon, Sheepstealer.

According to the source material, dragons like Vermax and those recently tamed, including Seasmoke under Laenor Velaryon’s command, are set to ignite the Triarchy’s warships in the Battle of the Gullet as depicted in House of the Dragon. While Seasmoke’s abilities were showcased during the Siege of Bloodstone, this will be Addam of Hull’s initial combat experience. The dragons Silverwing and Vermithor are known for their fierceness, having incinerated numerous aspiring dragonriders in the Red Sowing. Although Princess Rhaena has never ridden a dragon before, House of the Dragon hints at her acquiring a wild dragon at the Vale in the final episode. She will attempt to claim Sheepstealer, but whether she’ll make it to the Gullet is yet to be determined.
