Summary
- Overwatch 2‘s recent Steam reviews have improved to “Mixed” following the release of Season 15.
- Recent updates, including Season 15’s content and return to China, contributed to the positive shift.
- Overwatch 2 saw increased viewers on Twitch, hinting at potential upward trends in the game’s future.
Currently, the reviews for Overwatch 2 on Steam are showing as Mixed for the first time since it was launched in 2023. Despite the triumph of Season 15 and Overwatch 2’s comeback to China, Blizzard’s first-person shooter had been ranked lowest on Steam until recently, but it seems to be gradually improving its standing now.
On August 10th, 2023, Overwatch 2 launched Season 6, introducing a new support character named Illari and the debatable Invasion storyline missions. This update also marked the game’s debut on Steam, where it faced intense review bombing, ultimately ranking as the lowest-rated game available on the platform.
For the first time ever in its history, the rating for Overwatch 2 on Steam has started to improve significantly. As of February 19, just one day after the launch of Season 15, Overwatch 2’s recent reviews have changed from Negative to Mixed. Interestingly, its overall ratings have moved up from being Overwhelmingly Negative to Mostly Negative. This places it among the bottom 70 games on Steam with approximately 23% positive reviews. This notable change occurred in less than 48 hours, representing a significant shift compared to where Overwatch 2’s Steam rating stood nearly two years ago.
Overwatch 2 Season 15 is Doing Numbers on Steam and Twitch
There are several factors contributing to this unexpected change. The debut of Season 15 in Overwatch 2 has introduced Loot Boxes and a significant Perks system to the FPS genre. Additionally, the previous week’s Overwatch 2 Spotlight event showcased content that will be rolled out throughout the year, such as the Stadium game mode, Freya and Aqua heroes, and multiple new maps. On top of this, Overwatch 2 is now back in China, a region that had been criticizing the game on Steam. Given the high number of negative reviews from these players, the increasing positive feedback for Overwatch 2 on Steam might be just getting started.
In addition to attracting a large number of players on Steam, Overwatch 2 has also garnered significant attention elsewhere. As we speak, approximately 130,000 viewers are tuned into Overwatch 2 on Twitch – more than double the viewership of its main competitor, Marvel Rivals, and only surpassed by games such as League of Legends, Minecraft, Counter Strike, and GTA 5. It’s worth noting that this number is likely amplified due to Overwatch 2’s ongoing Twitch Drop campaign; however, even considering this factor, it’s still over eight times the average viewership of 15,000 on Monday, the day before Season 15 was released.
After a number of challenging years, it appears that Overwatch 2 is gradually picking up momentum. To find out if Blizzard can sustain this positive trajectory and bring forth even more thrilling content for Overwatch 2, fans should stay tuned to the FPS game.
