A fresh pair of Nike sneakers seems to draw inspiration from the iconic Donkey Kong Country series by Nintendo, as suggested by their appearance. As of now, no definitive launch date has been announced for these themed Nike shoes, but they are anticipated to hit the market around mid-2025.
In recent times, Nike has significantly advanced its connection with gaming communities by associating its brand image with the gaming world. This isn’t just about launching exclusive sneakers based on popular video game franchises, but also integrating real-world shoes into these games themselves. Towards the end of 2024, for instance, Fortnite introduced Nike-themed character skins and Nike Fortnite Kicks, a feature that enabled players to purchase in-game replicas of actual Nike sneakers for their characters.
According to an article from Hypebeast, Nike has introduced a new shoe model they’re calling “Big Head Origins.” While the name isn’t explicit, it seems the design of this shoe is inspired by the popular ’90s video game, Donkey Kong Country. The shoe is based on the Nike Air Max 1 that was featured in Fortnite as part of a collaborative event. These shoes are expected to hit stores sometime between spring and summer of 2025 for around $150 USD, although Nike hasn’t confirmed or listed them officially yet.
Nike Shoes Seemingly Reference Donkey Kong Country
In 2024, Nike sneakers were fashioned in harmony with the “Low Poly” style popularized by renowned Twitch streamer Kai Cenat. This design showcases a polygonal-style Nike logo on the sides similar to Kai’s aesthetic, and boasts a fur-like texture created through a blend of colors. The mudguards are tinted in a rich chocolate brown, while the soles are bright yellow – reminiscent of Donkey Kong Country’s iconic bananas. Delving into the shoes’ interiors, one will find references to Donkey Kong, such as “DS coins” that mimic the collectible DK coins from Donkey Kong Country 2.
The online response to the unveiling of the shoes was generally favorable, with dedicated Donkey Kong enthusiasts delighted by the nod to an old companion. However, some gamers expressed confusion over the shoe’s name “Big Head Origins,” as none of the Donkey Kong Country games developed by Rare feature a “big head” mode or cheat. Some theorized that this could be a reference not just to Donkey Kong, but to Rare itself, as activating the “DK Mode” in Goldeneye 007 gave characters proportions similar to Donkey Kong.
Nike’s innovative design for their new “Donkey Kong” shoes showcases the extent to which they appear willing to venture, aiming to captivate enthusiasts of vintage video games. Should these sneakers prove popular, further delightful nods and eye-catching aesthetics inspired by beloved game franchises may find their way onto store shelves and shoe displays in due time.
