Following in the footsteps of “It Takes Two”, the upcoming game “Split Fiction” intends to adopt a similar approach, known as Friend’s Pass, enhancing it further for teams using different gaming platforms. This feature was initially presented in the 2021 release of “It Takes Two”, a game produced by Hazelight Studios prior to “Split Fiction“. The Friend’s Pass enables the owner of the game to extend an invitation to another player for online cooperative play, without the invitee needing to purchase their own copy.
Ever since releasing their first co-op game, A Way Out in 2018, Hazelight Studios has been a significant player in the cooperative gaming genre, thanks to two critically acclaimed two-player games. Notably, this Swedish studio, helmed by Josef Fares who is also famous for his 2013 co-op hit Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, gained widespread popularity following the release of It Takes Two in 2021. This game earned the prestigious Game of the Year award at The Game Awards 2021 and has since sold over 20 million copies. Interestingly, this success was achieved even with the Friend’s Pass feature included, a trait that will also be found in its successor, Split Fiction.
In the announcement for Split Fiction, it was revealed that Hazelight Studios will retain the Friends Pass feature from It Takes Two and introduce cross-play support across PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. This makes Split Fiction the first game by Hazelight to offer cross-play, set to launch on March 6. To utilize the Friends Pass effectively, at least one player needs to own the game, while the other requires a download of the Friends Pass. The owner can then extend an invitation to the other player who must accept within the game to participate in the co-op play. Additionally, players hesitant about embarking on Split Fiction’s cooperative adventure can try out a trial version together using the Friends Pass, and if they decide to continue playing, their progress can be transferred into the main game once one of them purchases a copy.
Split Fiction Joins the List of Games that Offer a Friend’s Pass-Like Feature
The confirmation of “Split Fiction” in the Friend’s Pass has made it the third successive game by Hazelight Studios to feature this mode, following “A Way Out” and “It Takes Two.” Notably, there are other games developed by different studios that allow co-op play with only one person owning the game, such as “Rainbox Six Extraction,” which stands out due to its Buddy Pass support.
As the release date of “Split Fiction” by Hazelight Studios draws nearer, it appears the studio has begun outlining their plans for future projects. Back in February, Fares hinted that the team had commenced work on a new project, which could potentially be a cooperative game.
