- Jinshi pretends to be a eunuch to protect his true identity and avoid his designated role.
The second season of “The Apothecary Diaries” has been subtly hinting at future developments and setting the stage for significant disclosures. Although the first half-season handles numerous standalone scenarios, the second half will ramp up the intensity while preserving the episodic nature of the show.
Nevertheless, one particular occurrence that fans are eagerly anticipating is known as the “frog incident” between Maomao and Jinshi, which seems imminent towards the end of the first season. Moreover, the show has subtly highlighted the fact that Jinshi is a eunuch, suggesting he can’t engage in romantic relationships in the same way men typically do.
Many viewers hope that Maomao and Jinshi will eventually become a couple, and some are curious if there’s a possibility for Jinshi to avoid being a eunuch in the storyline. They speculate whether the show exaggerates this aspect intentionally to create a surprising twist later on. However, is it confirmed that Jinshi is indeed a eunuch?
The Truth About Jinshi’s “Frog”
In a second season installment, Maomao inadvertently reveals to Jinshi that jasmine tea could alleviate impotence, causing him to appear upset (as Jinshi is supposedly a eunuch). Although this aspect has been incorporated into the adaptation, the anime hasn’t yet demonstrated that Jinshi begins drinking jasmine tea following this revelation, which is a crucial hint suggesting he might not be entirely truthful about his identity. Similarly to another character, Jinshi also harbors hidden truths.
The pivotal moment is when the frog incident occurs. Following a change in events, Maomao and Jinshi find themselves near a waterfall and attempt to reach a nearby cave. However, an unforeseen leap from a frog lands on her head, causing them both to lose their balance. In doing so, Maomao accidentally places her hands between Jinshi’s legs – a discovery that leads her to believe he is not castrated. Meanwhile, Jinshi insists she touched a frog instead, and from then on, his private area is humorously referred to as “the frog.
Why Does Jinshi Pretend to Be a Eunuch?

It seems that if Jinshi isn’t a eunuch, there might be a reason for him acting as one. One possibility is that he does this to conceal his true identity. In reality, Jinshi is closely related to the Emperor and wields significant power at court because of his royal lineage.
Yet, he holds this position not just due to circumstance, but also because he desires it himself, finding discomfort in the role that traditionally suits him. His authentic identity, a pivotal point in the narrative, will be unveiled at a later time; a secret even many within the Inner Court remain oblivious to.
You can stream “The Apothecary Diaries” on Crunchyroll, with both subtitled and dubbed versions available in numerous languages. In some Asian regions, it’s also accessible on Netflix.
