Video games create an unusual bond between players and their in-game characters, explaining why the pain of betrayal feels so intense.
It’s not unusual in media for beloved characters to become villainous, but when these characters are exceptionally well-developed, the act of betrayal leaves a lasting impact on the fans.
Here, we’re going to examine ten shocking video game betrayals that still linger in our memories long after they occurred.
|It goes without saying, but here’s your SPOILER WARNING for every game on the list.
10. Loyalists – Dishonored
Not So Loyal After All
One might assume that a secret cabal would pause before attempting to poison a master assassin with extraordinary abilities, who was dispatched throughout the city to eliminate their enemies in a quest for retribution.
Apparently, Admiral Havelock and the other loyalists didn’t get the memo.
Following his false accusation for the empress’s murder in the game Dishonored, Corvo tirelessly works to rescue Emily, aided by an underground network striving to reinstate her to her proper position of power.
After the revolutionaries win their struggle, Corvo poses a problem for Havelock, as Havelock intends to secretly control the crown prince and rule behind the scenes. Therefore, it becomes necessary for Havelock to eliminate Corvo.
Regrettably for their part, Corvo’s tough hide, along with his special abilities, enable him to endure the poisoning. As a result, he lives on to seek further revenge.
9. Leo and Vincent – A Way Out
From PvE to PvP

The charm of the game “A Way Out” can be largely attributed to events unfolding off-screen. Being an exclusive cooperative game, it progresses its narrative only when players work together towards their shared objective – escaping from prison. This teamwork creates a bond reminiscent of brotherhood, which is reflected by the characters on screen.
And then the final twist happens.
Under some unspecified pressures, Vincent and Leo are compelled to oppose one another in a dramatic gunfight, a betrayal that mirrors the sense of disappointment felt by players who have invested considerable time collaborating with each other.
The game presents two possible conclusions, one for each character who could make it through the climactic battle. Regardless of who comes out on top, they will all undergo a transformative journey as a result. It’s not only Vincent and Leo who are affected by this experience.
8. Atlas – Bioshock
I Kindly Would Not

Upon your initial entry into Rapture, the oppressive ambiance is nearly stifling. Oddly altered beings and colossal figures wielding drills instead of hands populate the city, leaving no immediate or evident means of exit.
Amidst all the chaos, your only connection is a familiar voice guiding you through the ordeal.
In the game ‘Bioshock‘, Atlas appears as a symbol of hope amidst despair, serving as a benevolent, almost angelic figure. However, the shock is immense when the truth unfolds, revealing that he has been manipulating you from the start.
The shocking act of treachery ignites such a fierce determination within you, driving your thirst for retribution and resolution during the climax of the game. Simply brilliant storytelling.
7. Master Miller – Metal Gear Solid
Enemy On The Inside

In my case, the surprising turn of events in the story left such an impact on me as a child that I felt compelled to mention it here.
In the thrilling storyline of Metal Gear Solid, I found myself relying on the invaluable assistance of some incredibly talented comrades from afar, significantly enhancing my odds of completing my assignment on Shadow Moses Island successfully.
One individual you’ll encounter is Kazuhira Miller, a crucial source for Snake in maneuvering the treacherous Alaskan terrain. Yet, the person identified as “Master Miller,” the one communicating with Snake through the coded radio, ultimately proves to be an imposter.
In his apartment, the genuine Miller was discovered deceased, murdered by an assassin. The person speaking through the communicator turned out to be none other than Liquid Snake disguised as Miller, aiming to deceive and undermine the operation.
6. Wheatley – Portal 2
Sarcastic Slow Clap Activated

In the opening scene of Portal 2, it’s made clear that our protagonist, Chell, didn’t depart from the Aperture Science facilities following her victory over GLaDOS in the previous installment.
After she gets her bearings and figures out the situation, Wheatly, a playful yet innocent artificial intelligence system, helps her along her path to liberation.
In my fervor, I find myself once again facing off against the formidable AI overlord residing within the facility. In a surprising turn of events, I manage to outsmart and replace her with none other than Wheatley, effectively defeating the overlord.
Everything appears to be in order, but there’s a tiny hint of madness that unexpectedly takes hold of Wheatley, causing him to attempt to eliminate Chell and GLaDOS. This leads to an unusual partnership between the two entities.
If you’re among those rare individuals who haven’t been captivated by the extraordinary writing in Portal 2, let me assure you that this description falls short in conveying its true charm. I strongly encourage you to give the game a try – once you’ve finished perusing the rest of the suggestions, naturally.
5. Patches – Souls Franchise
Not You Again!

To be fair, this one is only shocking the first time, but I’d argue it still counts.
In the majority of games produced by From Software, Patch can be found as a regular character, ranging from titles like “Demon’s Souls” up to “Elden Ring.
In every game, the deceitful individual, who is bald, pretends friendship but ultimately resorts to underhand tactics, causing harm to the other player. Later, he humbly begs for forgiveness and pleads for mercy at their feet. This pattern of behavior is consistent in all games without exception.
He’s an absolute rat, but after all this time, we’ve grown fond of the guy. More or less.
4. Albert Wesker – Resident Evil
You’re Undead To Me

In the classic Resident Evil mansion, when the S.T.A.R.S. team is cornered, their sole means of survival becomes depending on one another.
It becomes clear that their hope fades rapidly when they learn that their very own leader is secretly working for the Umbrella Corporation, and it was under his guidance that they met their tragic end.
Although Wesker’s act of deception might seem clearer compared to others listed, it still ranks as one of the most significant betrayals ever seen in video game lore.
Starting from then, the influence of Albert Wesker can be felt throughout the following games – even when he isn’t present – as his menacing presence serves as a foundation for one of the most renowned antagonists in gaming.
3. Big Smoke – GTA: San Andreas
All Smoke, No Fire

Upon CJ’s return to Los Santos following his mother’s demise in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, it never crossed his mind that one of his dearest friends could have been involved in the crime.
In a friendly manner, Big Smoke poses as a supportive ally towards CJ. Upon CJ’s return to town, he takes on the role of a guide, assisting CJ in his process of rejoining the Grove Street Families.
Hidden away from prying eyes, I found myself striking alliances with the Ballas and the ruthless Russian Mafia, little did my brothers in Grove Street know. These clandestine deals would ultimately lead me down a treacherous path, culminating in my betrayal of our neighborhood. The city was sent spiraling into turmoil, and I rose to become an influential drug kingpin.
I’d dare to guess no one anticipated it. In the end, he receives his due, yet his act of treachery hurts the most since he seemed so much like kin.
2. Shepherd – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
One Less Loose End

Despite the common perception that the “Call of Duty” series is typically enjoyed by a certain male demographic, or “dudebros”, there’s no denying that many gamers remain fond of the storylines from its earlier installments.
The engaging narrative, thrilling gameplay, and sense of teamwork fostered in Modern Warfare 2 were particularly noteworthy. However, the chilling moment when Lieutenant General Shepherd unexpectedly turned traitor by brutally murdering Roach and Ghost left players stunned.
There’s a powerful tale about loss and the impact that war has on its soldiers, yet despite this, there was widespread applause when Price and Soap successfully avenged their comrades who had been lost.
Or:
The narrative is one of sorrow and heartache caused by war, but in the end, everyone celebrated as Price and Soap brought justice to their fallen comrades.
1. Dutch Van Der Linde – Red Dead Redemption 2
Yes, Even Worse Than Micah

It’s clear that we all dislike Micah due to his traitorous actions – he snitched on the gang to the Pinkertons. Adding to this, he’s just not a pleasant individual to be around. However, it’s important to note that Micah’s betrayal is minor compared to Dutch Van Der Linde’s, the gang leader, who committed an even greater act of treachery.
In the initial phase of “Red Dead Redemption 2”, Dutch is portrayed as a paternal figure and beacon of guidance for the gang. However, hidden under this exterior is an unparalleled sense of self-aggrandizement that is quite extraordinary.
In the course of events, it is revealed that Dutch didn’t regard his gang associates as individuals but merely as resources for his ambitions. When their allegiance faltered, he showed no qualms about deserting them, which ultimately resulted in the break-up of the gang.
In the end, Dutch opted to believe Micah’s persuasive words, which stoked his illusions over those who genuinely cared for him, a choice that eventually resulted in his ruin and the tragic loss of the individuals who had attempted to aid him.
