At the beginning of 2025, semiconductor titan Nvidia finds itself in an advantageous situation: It is expanding into areas such as AI, robotics, and medicine, all while maintaining a substantial edge in GPUs over its competitors. This strategic position has earned it considerable favor on Wall Street in recent years.
While many are excited about it, some potential gamers express less enthusiasm: those seeking the newest Blackwell-based RTX 50 series GPUs from Nvidia, specifically the RTX 5090 and 5080. Despite the RTX 5070 Ti being available this week, the RTX 5090, in particular, is difficult to find. Even with an MSRP of $2000, AIB partners are charging up to $3000 for some high-end versions of these hard-to-locate products.
Despite this situation, opportunistic resellers known as scalpers haven’t been deterred. They’ve plunged into a scenario that resembles a perfect storm: low availability and high, unrestrained demand for Nvidia’s most rapid consumer-level GPU. Already, comments from Team Green suggest the possibility of ‘stock shortages’.
Following the outcome, some sellers have increased the price of RTX 5090 listings by anywhere from $1000 to $8000, according to the observations made by the Game Rant team across various forums. The high-end models like the RTX 5090 Astral OC from ASUS and MSI’s SUPRIM versions have been hit hardest in terms of price hikes. Although the RTX 5080 is less impacted compared to its premium sibling, it still fetches a higher price due to tariffs pushing MSRP prices upward in a market that is already grappling with stock shortages.
Nvidia’s Verified Priority Access Program: A Fairer Allocation Attempt
To their advantage, Nvidia is working to resolve the supply shortage by making a concerted effort to distribute more RTX 5090 and 5080 Founders Edition SKUs specifically to legitimate gamers and content creators whom they can authenticate.
A staff member from Nvidia recently brought attention to their newly launched Verified Priority Access Program through a post on their online community forum.
If the ongoing supply shortage continues this quarter, Nvidia’s Verified Priority Access could be your best chance to secure an RTX 50 series GPU for those who meet the criteria. You’ll have the option to express interest in both the RTX 5080 and the RTX 5090 (or either), but it’s important to note that selecting this option doesn’t guarantee you’ll receive one as Nvidia’s announcement suggests users can simply ‘express their interest’ through the provided form.
How Do You Sign Up For Nvidia’s Verified Priority Access
It appears that Nvidia’s sign-up process is quite simple if you want to secure the opportunity to buy either of the Founders Edition versions of its top-tier and second-highest tier GPU models.
If you are interested, you need to meet the following requirements:
- You must currently reside in the United States.
- You must have an Nvidia account created on or before the 30th of Jan 2025 (6 AM Pacific Time to be exact).
- You must fill out this form to get a chance to qualify.
It’s important to keep in mind that receiving the offer next week doesn’t guarantee you’ll have access to the product, as availability is limited. The rollout is specifically for Nvidia Founder’s Edition models, with AIB partners and retailers like Newegg (which has a raffle to manage supply shortages) being the only sources for customized RTX 5090 or 5080 GPUs at this time.
