2024 might not be considered a great year by many flight simulation enthusiasts. The launch of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 in November was fraught with issues, and it’s yet to fully recover. Additionally, the beloved study sim, DCS World, has been entangled in a legal dispute with one of its major subsidiary studios.
1C Game Studios, the team responsible for the Il-2 Sturmovik: Great Battles series, has declared a heartfelt farewell addition to their franchise, aiming to dispel any negative energies associated with flight sims.
In the 367th installment of their developer updates, the creators unveiled the imminent launch of the “Defense and Liberation” expansion pack. Instead of zeroing in on a single map during a particular era, this exciting DLC doubles the enjoyment by offering two distinctive maps and periods.
The game “Defense and Liberation” portrays the struggles for Leningrad and Odessa during 1941 and 1944 respectively. In essence, it features two different campaigns: one centered on Operation Barbarossa in 1941, and another focusing on the liberation efforts of 1944.
The upcoming expansion includes the usual 10 new aircraft, but there’s a slight imbalance since many major Axis planes are already present in other collections within the game.
1941 saw Soviet fighter pilots equipped with three aircraft models: the I-153 biplane, the LaGG-3 version 4, and the Yak-1 version 23. On the Axis side, they were given the Bf-109E-4 variant of Messerschmitt’s renowned fighter.
In the 1944 configuration, we see a greater diversity. Aircraft lovers focused on ground attack can pilot the ’44 model of the Il-2, famously known for its swept wings, while the ’43 Ju-87D-5 takes to the skies as a dive bomber.
In the years that followed, there was no equal multiplayer representation for late-war German and Soviet fighters. However, now, they’ll gain access to the La-7 and the all-metal Yak-3 s.9 models.
What’s The Future of Il-2?
As a dedicated gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but share my excitement about the grand finale of the mainline expansions for the Il-2 Sturmovik: Great Battles series – Defense and Liberation, the eleventh instalment in this epic saga.
As a gaming enthusiast, I found myself drawn into the world of the 2013 franchise, which was essentially a heartfelt tribute, a spiritual successor if you will, to Oleg Maddox’s Il-2 Sturmovik series from 2001. It was a humble beginning that sparked a passion in me for this new game.
Over time, as new leaders took charge, the game titled “Il-2 Sturmovik: Great Battles” introduced expansion packs that centered around World War II conflicts in Stalingrad, Moscow, Kuban, northwestern Europe, and Normandy.
1CGS ventured back into their World War 1 collection by introducing the “Flying Circus” series, aiming to rival other tank simulation games with the “Tank Crew,” which focused on the 1943 Battle of Kursk.
Following their success in rekindling the genre of realistic World War II aerial combat, the developers have shifted their focus towards the Orient.
1CGS officially announced in June 2024 that their upcoming project is going to be based on the Korean War, an essential historical period often eclipsed in popularity by World War II and the Vietnam War.
Under the guidance of ex-development manager Daniil ‘Han’ Tuseev, the development team routinely shares updates on their official website for the forthcoming game.
1CGS hasn’t given a definite timeline yet, but the developers have voiced their optimism that the game might be released by the year-end in 2025.
