Over the years, Naughty Dog’s masterpiece, The Last of Us, has undeniably outshone other titles, including the explosive conclusions of Uncharted‘s installments like A Thief’s End and Lost Legacy. It’s intriguing to note that despite having only two games, The Last of Us has been widely acclaimed and its fame continues to soar, with the forthcoming third game and episodes of HBO’s series yet to be released. Although the HBO adaptation of The Last of Us roughly followed Part 1 in Season 1, adapting Part 2 for Season 2 will prove to be a complex endeavor.
The narrative of “The Last of Us Part 2” is more intricate compared to its predecessor because of its multiple interconnected viewpoints. With HBO planning a four-season series, it appears that Naughty Dog might feel the need to develop “The Last of Us Part 3”. Typically, this wouldn’t be an issue since “Part 2” wouldn’t pick up from “The Last of Us” after such a long gap. However, HBO’s schedule for its live-action adaptation implies that a third game may need to conclude the storyline earlier rather than later, given that another project, “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet”, is in development as well.
Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is a Much-Needed Detour for Naughty Dog
It seems likely that Naughty Dog intends to focus all their efforts on the new game, “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet“, and release it before a potential third installment of “The Last of Us“. Given that “The Last of Us” has been the main source of income for Naughty Dog, it would be beneficial to take a step back from it for now. After all, with multiple remasters and remakes, as well as a recently canceled spin-off multiplayer game, it’s prudent to give “The Last of Us” some space until the dust settles. This will allow “Intergalactic” to bask in the spotlight without competition from its predecessor.
It’s unlikely that we’ll see anything intergalactic before 2026, as there’s currently no scheduled timeline given.
As a die-hard gamer, I can’t help but wonder about the mystery surrounding “The Last of Us Part 3”. Since nothing has been disclosed yet, it seems unlikely that we’ll get our hands on this game before another epic, intergalactic adventure takes center stage. Given the lengthy production cycles for top-notch, AAA, first-party studios, it wouldn’t shock me if “The Last of Us Part 3” doesn’t hit shelves until at least 2030. I can hardly wait to see how the release date for this game aligns with its story’s adaptation on screen!
The Last of Us’ HBO Show May Be Stretched Thin by the Time The Last of Us Part 3 Launches
The potential run for four seasons of “The Last of Us” HBO show might not hold true if there isn’t enough story left from the game to continue. However, since such a length has been discussed and disclosed, it’s likely that talks about incorporating a “Part 3” adaptation into the series have already taken place.
Initially, it was suggested that two seasons might be necessary to encompass the events of Part 2, while only one season could potentially be dedicated to Part 3. However, if each following season is produced swiftly, there isn’t much time left for Naughty Dog to develop and release Part 3, given the current pace.
It would be unusual if Naughty Dog revealed the plot of “Part 3” before its release, as it stands now. Similarly, it would be peculiar for HBO to not adapt “Part 3.” Despite potentially being several years away, it will be intriguing to observe how the show and the sequel connect and influence each other given Naughty Dog’s busy schedule.
