Summary
- Zachary Levi’s latest film, The Unbreakable Boy, faces disappointing box office opening, setting a record.
- The film struggled to gain traction and compete with box office hits like Ne Zha 2, marking a significant misstep.
- Despite a heartwarming premise, delays and lack of marketing may impact the film’s future success.
Zachary Levi’s recent movie, titled “The Unbreakable Boy“, has unfortunately established a new low for the actor, representing his smallest box office debut so far. The heartwarming Lionsgate production, initially scheduled to release in 2022, has finally made its way to cinemas following numerous postponements, but its premiere has fallen short of expectations, resulting in a letdown for Lionsgate.
Known for his performances in “Chuck”, “Tangled”, and the “Shazam!” series, Levi has experienced some challenging times at the box office recently. His 2023 superhero sequel, “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” underperformed significantly, generating only $134.1 million compared to a production budget of $125 million, placing it as the second-lowest-grossing film in the DC Extended Universe, slightly surpassing “Blue Beetle” ($130.8 million). In 2024, he featured in “Harold and the Purple Crayon,” which too fell short of expectations, garnering $32 million against a budget of $40 million. Unfortunately, “The Unbreakable Boy” appears set to underperform even more.
In its debut week, the movie titled “The Unbreakable Boy” has had a rocky start, posing a setback for Lionsgate that was previously enjoying success with films such as “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” and “Flight Risk“. As reported by Awards Radar, the film managed to rake in only $2.5 million during its premiere, a dismal performance considering the numerous postponements it faced due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other reasons, with its eventual release happening this weekend.
The Unbreakable Boy Sets an Unfortunate Record for Zachary Levi
Initially slated for a 2025 premiere, “The Unbreakable Boy” actually started filming in 2021. Many developments have occurred since then, notably for its main actor, Zachary Levi. Despite earning a good CinemaScore, the movie failed to generate momentum and essentially flopped, especially when faced with heavyweights like “Ne Zha 2” at the box office. This Chinese animated blockbuster has now dethroned “Inside Out 2” as the highest-grossing animated film ever, raking in more than $2 billion worldwide, thereby casting an even longer shadow on “The Unbreakable Boy.
This movie is inspired by the true events in the life of Scott LeRette and his son Austin, portrayed by Jacob Laval. The story follows Levi, who plays Scott, as he tackles the unique challenges of raising Austin, a young boy with brittle bone disease and autism. Alongside Meghann Fahy, Drew Powell, and Patricia Heaton, they bring to life a tale that highlights “faith, joy, gratitude, and courage,” focusing on their remarkable father-son bond and their journey of resilience. Originally based on LeRette’s 2014 memoir, “The Unbreakable Boy: A Father’s Fear, a Son’s Courage, and a Story of Unconditional Love,” co-written with Susy Flory, the book provides a heartfelt account of Scott’s personal challenges and victories as a father, offering a close look into their extraordinary family journey.
Although the film’s touching concept was promising, its postponed premiere and weak marketing push could have affected its modest earnings at the box office. Despite Levi’s enduring popularity in the entertainment industry, his string of box office flops has sparked doubts about his continued success as a leading actor in cinematic releases. Whether The Unbreakable Boy will secure a resurgence on streaming platforms or gain traction through word-of-mouth is yet to be determined.
