The head of esports event organizer PGL has stated that there have been persistent attempts by various entities to prevent them from holding CS2 tournaments. Remarkably, even with several teams deciding to withdraw from the competition just before it began, the latest PGL event in Cluj-Napoca managed to sell out all its tickets.
PGL CEO Says Anyone Trying to Monopolize CS2 “Will Simply Fail”
After the decisive finals of PGL Cluj-Napoca, where MOUZ triumphed over Falcons 3-1, the CEO of PGL, Silviu Stroie, expressed his joy on X (previously known as Twitter). During his celebration, he also voiced his opposition towards the supposed attempts to undermine PGL events. He further called out those aiming to dominate the CS2 tournament scene.
We’ve chosen Cluj Napoca, Romania as the location for our long-awaited home-turf event, and it was an unforgettable success! This event ranks among the best we’ve ever hosted. Undeterred by attempts from various parties to halt our CS2 events, we’re committed to continuing them. Counter-Strike has captured the hearts of gamers worldwide, and any entity aiming to monopolize it will ultimately fall short. Our next live arena event is slated for May in Astana, where we anticipate another packed house filled with enthusiastic [Counter-Strike] fans.
It appears that Stroie’s comment indicates that the parties trying to hinder PGL are likely larger organizers such as ESL and BLAST. Before 2025, these organizations ran primary Counter-Strike leagues where partnered organizations were incentivized to prioritize their events over others, except for Majors. These teams not only prioritized the events organized by ESL and BLAST but also, the partner programs limited the number of non-partnered teams that could qualify for these events.
2023 changes implemented by Valve significantly impacted these programs, with the effects becoming apparent in 2025. These alterations prohibited partnerships between teams and organizers, mandated that all events utilize Valve rankings or open qualifiers for entry, and required organizers to disclose their compensation details. In response to this, ESL and BLAST have recently unveiled new revenue distribution systems. As reported by Milan “Striker” Švejda of HLTV, the absence of a revenue-sharing model was one of the reasons behind some top teams deciding not to participate in PGL Cluj-Napoca.
Although PGL didn’t opt for a revenue share system, their Cluj-Napoca event garnered acclaim due to its innovative format. Specifically, spectators were generally thrilled to witness a substantial 3rd place match, which increased the competition’s intensity by enhancing the Valve rankings and significantly boosting the prize pool.
