Marvel Exec Explains Why Nova And Other Series Were Shelved

Summary

  • Marvel Studios’ head discusses the shelving of the Nova show due to changes in production strategy and project readiness.
  • The Nova show was ambitious, but obscure characters and high production costs could have led to the decision.
  • Daredevil: Born Again may open the door for shelved MCU shows to return, offering hope for fans.

Recently, the Marvel Cinematic Universe postponed its much-anticipated upcoming project. Fans who eagerly awaited this production are now receiving clear explanations as to why it has been delayed, along with insights into the fate of two other projects in the pipeline.

For a significant period, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) reigned supreme in the movie industry, leaving its main competitors lacking vitality after the incredible success of the Infinity Saga and the underperformance of the DCEU during the Snyderverse era. Following the culmination of this phase with Avengers: Endgame, the franchise ventured into a new realm, creating shows for Disney+, and achieved early success with WandaVision. This marked the beginning of numerous spin-offs, connections, and standalone projects being proposed or discussed for the streaming platform. However, the MCU encountered a hurdle in its ambitious plans to expand. A mix of alterations within the creative team behind Daredevil: Born Again and Disney’s strategic response to fierce competition in the streaming market led to some of these projects being abandoned as the entire slate underwent reassessment.

The long-awaited moment arrived at Marvel Studios last week, as it was disclosed that three shows in production for Disney+ had been temporarily halted, with the much-anticipated Nova series being one of them. Despite this surprising turn of events, fans can now gain a bit more understanding behind the reasoning and potential implications for the show’s future. In an interview snippet from the Phase Hero podcast, shared by host Brandon Davis on YouTube, Marvel Studios Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation Brad Winderbaum discussed the decision to postpone the eagerly awaited Nova project and shed some light on the studio’s thought process. “As you might recall, we’ve mentioned it before – we develop more than we produce,” Winderbaum explained. “It’s a conventional television model, but since we are Marvel, there’s greater scrutiny. Nova, indeed, is one of my favourite characters, and there are numerous factors at play. When we create something, the content may be excellent, but the timing might not be right.

After Marvel Studios had two different writers work on refining it, the material seemed quite promising, and there were even whispers about Henry Cavill potentially joining the Nova series. However, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently at a critical crossroads, and significant shifts towards standard TV production methods were indeed announced and implemented. These changes led to decisions like the one Winderbaum mentioned here. He explained, “As we decide what to greenlight, sometimes things need to be put on hold temporarily. They might not be canceled forever, but we’re only going to produce content that we believe is prepared for multiple seasons.”

Before the internal changes at Marvel Studios, most Disney+ projects were not designed with multiple seasons in mind and often featured storylines that reflected this temporary nature. This could have been a factor in many of these shows failing to resonate with fans.

The Nova series was certainly ambitious for a Disney+ project, guaranteed to be effects-heavy and set to take inspiration from some big sci-fi franchises, a property of the series that was somewhat ironically revealed to fans by Winderbaum during a previous appearance on Phase Hero with Brandon Davis. While the obscure nature of the character for mainstream audiences could have played a part in the show not being seen as a feasible choice to run for multiple seasons, the scale and cost of production could have also worked against it being chosen. The other two shows that were shelved alongside it could also be seen as falling into this category, with Strange Academy bound to require a lot of special effects magic to bring all its in-universe magic to life and the protagonist for Terror, Inc. bordering on body horror. Of these, Strange Academy also makes the best case against the choice being based on obscurity, as the series was set to be headlined by Wong and potentially feature Doctor Strange, while the wider franchise continues to subtly build up to introducing the barely known Young Avengers.

In its current state, enthusiasts might find solace in Charlie Cox’s upcoming MCU solo series, “Daredevil: Born Again,” as it could potentially pave the way for other Defenders. A successful run of this show may also help bring back some of the stalled productions into motion. While unexpected events can always occur, Marvel Cinematic Universe fans eagerly anticipating the arrival of Nova might discern a hint of what’s to come when “Born Again” premieres on Disney+ in March.
