Summary
- Dauntless will shut down on May 29, and will receive no further updates or content before then.
- The shutdown comes after Phoenix Labs’ controversial Awakening update in late 2024.
- Microtransactions in Dauntless may see policy changes before the game’s closure.
On social media platforms, developer Phoenix Labs announced that the monster-hunting online game “Dauntless” will be taken offline on May 29th. Regrettably, due to the divisive launch of the Awakening update towards the end of 2024, Phoenix Labs has also stated that there will be no further updates or content additions for Dauntless before its shutdown in May.
First debuted in September 2019 across PC and gaming consoles, “Dauntless” marked Phoenix Labs’ initial foray into game development. Drawing inspiration from titles such as “Monster Hunter”, “Dauntless” is a free-to-play title that lets players collaborate to battle Behemoths of varying complexity levels. Over the course of its first two years, it was also launched on the Nintendo Switch, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. In 2023, Phoenix Labs was acquired by Forte Labs, a company specializing in blockchain technology. After the release of the Awakening update, “Dauntless” received negative reviews on Steam from disgruntled players, resulting in an overall rating that is predominantly unfavorable at the current moment.
Following a significant staff reduction at Phoenix Labs in January 2025, they disclosed that the popular game, Dauntless, would not last much longer. On social media, Phoenix Labs officially confirmed the unfortunate news that Dauntless would cease operation on May 29 at 11:45 PM Pacific Time or 2:45 AM Eastern Time on May 30. Despite initial plans to release an update addressing issues raised post-Awakening, this is no longer the case. From now until its shutdown, Dauntless will not receive any more updates or fresh content. This means players have only three months left to explore all the content currently available in the game. As May draws to a close, access to the Dauntless servers will be terminated, and the game will be withdrawn from all digital marketplaces.
When Is Dauntless Shutting Down?
- Dauntless will shut down on May 29, 2025.
In the case of “Dauntless,” a game that heavily relies on microtransactions, it’s yet unclear what adjustments will be made as the game approaches its closure, happening only three months before its sixth anniversary. Despite Phoenix Labs discontinuing support for “Dauntless,” their second title, a farming simulator named “Fae Farm,” continues to be accessible. As of now, “Fae Farm” has already released an expansion called “Skies of Azoria” in June 2024, which introduced a sky-based environment for players to discover.
Despite being widely regarded as one of the top non-Capcom monster-slaying games, Dauntless met its end following the unsuccessful release of its Awakening update. Similarly, since Fae Farm can only be played after a purchase, it remains to be seen if it will experience a similar unfortunate downfall like Dauntless.
