Summary
- Dark Souls 3 has remained popular for nearly a decade, thanks to its diverse builds and weapon variety, with colossal weapons being a favorite among fans.
- Players can wield ultra-heavy weapons like the Dragonslayer Greataxe or Morne’s Great Hammer for massive damage, but these require a high Strength stat and plenty of Stamina.
- Ledo’s Great Hammer, the heaviest weapon introduced in The Ringed City DLC, boasts absurd requirements and unparalleled weight, alongside impressive damage.
Even after nearly a decade since its debut, the game Dark Souls 3 continues to shine as a leader in the Souls-like genre. In many ways, it comes very close to FromSoftware’s highly successful title, Elden Ring, when it comes to mechanics, world design, and the diversity of enemies and weapons. It is likely this similarity that keeps Dark Souls 3 popular, with thousands of players from both experienced veterans and newcomers continuing to play it regularly.
Over time, I’ve had plenty of chances to handle Dark Souls 3’s impressive weaponry, from towering great hammers and greataxes to the massive ultra greatswords. These are some of the bulkiest and downright enormous weapons in the game, but they don’t come without their challenges. For one, these comically large weapons can obstruct my view, and mastering them requires a significant investment of time and effort due to their high Strength demands and rapid Stamina depletion.
As a seasoned gamer delving into the dark realm of Dark Souls 3, I’ll be sharing my findings on the heftiest weapons our game has to offer, including those from the DLC expansions: Ashes of Ariandel and The Ringed City. This ranking is all about the sheer size, mass, and demands each weapon places upon us, rather than its unique abilities or combat prowess.
So buckle up, fellow travelers, as we embark on this weighty journey through Dark Souls 3’s arsenal!
8. Greatsword
Weight: 20.0

- Strength requirement: 28 STR
- Two-handed: 19 STR
Contrary to its name, this isn’t just any ordinary Greatsword from FromSoftware. Instead, it belongs to the category of Ultra Greatswords and bears little resemblance to the usual, fashionable Greatswords, which are quite popular in Dark Souls 3. In reality, it’s too large to be accurately called a sword; it’s more like a massive, sharpened bar that the character surprisingly handles by its tiny grip.
As a devoted enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at the Greatsword, one of the heaviest in the game. Its in-game description hints at it being crafted as a challenge to test the very pinnacle of human strength. Yet, given its surprisingly reasonable Strength requirement, I can’t shake off the feeling that this might just be another tale spun by the game creators. After all, wielding such a colossal weapon seems anything but modest!
Where to find the Greatsword:
The giant sword, known as the Greatsword, is retrieved from a deceased body located on a shattered bridge within Farron Keep. There’s no denying that wielding such an enormous blade against adversaries brings immense gratification, so it’s likely that its previous owner passed away contentedly.
7. Dragonslayer Greataxe
Weight: 20.0

- Strength requirement: 40 STR
- Two-handed: 27 STR
As a fervent admirer, let me share my thoughts on the enchanting Dragonslayer Greataxe. While it shares weight with the formidable Greatsword, its design offers an exquisite balance that sets it apart. Its melted iron look adds a unique charm, and its dimensions, though modest, are just right. The handle, surprisingly comfortable for a weapon of such might, only serves to heighten its allure. Once enhanced to its full potential, this beauty unleashes preposterous amounts of lightning damage with each strike, and its power is more than sufficient to deliver crushing critical hits.
Among numerous enthusiasts, it’s widely agreed that the Dragonslayer Greataxe stands uncontested as the top weapon for Player versus Environment (PvE) in Dark Souls 3. This is due to its incredible lightning damage and a skill that swiftly dispatches almost every boss the game presents, including the formidable Nameless King.
How to get the Dragonslayer Greataxe:
This formidable weapon is transferrable, derived from the spirit of the Dragon Slayer Armor, which is dropped by a formidable boss found in Lothric Castle, close to the Dragon Barracks checkpoint.
6. Dragon Tooth
Weight: 21.0

- Strength requirement: 40 STR
- Two-handed: 27 STR
As I gaze upon this eternal Dragon Tooth, a weapon that promises unbreakable durability, I can’t help but feel compelled to give it a try. With its ties to the iconic NPC Havel the Rock, the allure becomes even stronger. I mean, who wouldn’t want to embody The Rock in Dark Souls 3?
Upon closer inspection, the design of this weapon seems unusual – it’s shaped like an upside-down dragon’s tooth, striking enemies with its base instead of the sharp point. Quite curious, isn’t it? But on a positive note, once equipped, this mighty hammer boosts your Magic and Fire damage resistance, and surprisingly, the Strength requirement to wield it is quite manageable.
How to get the Dragon Tooth:
The Dragon Tooth is dropped by the Havel Knight found in a secret area of Archdragon Peak.
5. Ringed Knight Paired Greatswords
Weight: 22.5

- Strength requirement: 40 STR
- Two-handed: 27 STR
Wow, just wow! Gaze upon the majesty of the Ringed Knight Paired Greatswords, a breathtaking beauty that’s one-of-a-kind among its peers, introduced in the DLC for The Ringed City. These bad boys are not only visually striking, with their ominous design said to have been forged in the depths of the Abyss, but they also pack a serious punch in Dark Souls 3. As I wield these twin titans, I can’t help but feel like a true warrior of the ringed city!
One intriguing aspect of these extraordinary greatswords is that they seem to mysteriously demand less physical strength from the user when wielded in a two-handed fashion. It appears that a blend of physics and exceptional body balance is responsible for this phenomenon.
How to get the Ringed Knight Paired Greatswords:
Only available within the expansion known as “The Ringed City” DLC. These items are dropped by the Ringed Knight and can be found before the cathedral. It’s time for a trial by fire to commence.
4. Smough’s Great Hammer
Weight: 24.0

- Strength requirement: 45 STR
- Two-handed: 30 STR
In the game Dark Souls 3, the colossal, misshapen hammer wielded by Executioner Smough reappears, living up to its legendary status. The sheer size and warped design of this massive drum mounted on an impossibly slender handle make it a spectacle that could tempt some gamers to try it out. However, take heed: one of the standout features of this weapon is that players will find themselves blinded while using it.
Smough’s Great Hammer appears to replenish HP upon each strike, but be cautious. Regardless of optimal circumstances and top-tier equipment, the amount of HP recovery is insignificant, thus a viable life-leeching setup cannot be achieved—such an outcome simply isn’t feasible.
Where to find Smough’s Great Hammer:
In the Boreal Valley’s Irithyll, you’ll discover it in a chest situated on the second level of a building adorned with paintings. Regrettably, there’s no duel with Ornstein and Smough for those who miss them; no such boss fight ensues.
3. Morne’s Great Hammer
Weight: 24.0

- Strength requirement: 50 STR
- Two-handed: 34 STR
This intricately designed hammer, with its museum-like appearance, seems more suited for display than battle – and yet, it doesn’t bother us one bit. However, what leaves us puzzled isn’t just its design but its prerequisites. Designed primarily for characters who have both high Strength and Faith, this massive yet elegant weapon may not be compatible with pure Strength characters, thereby reducing its attractiveness in Dark Souls 3.
It’s intriguing that although Morne’s Great Hammer shares a similar weight with Smough’s massive hammer, it appears far less hefty and cumbersome. Some enchantment from the Paladin must be involved in this case.
How to get Morne’s Great Hammer:
In the hands of Eygon from Carim, this weapon gets discarded upon his demise. Alternatively, you might find it on Eygon’s body at a later time within Irina of Carim’s former cell.
2. Fume Ultra Greatsword
Weight: 25.5

- Strength requirement: 50 STR
- Two-handed: 34 STR
Initially in the game Dark Souls 3, the Fume Ultra Greatsword stood as the bulkiest and most formidable weapon, with its strength requirements roughly matching Morne’s Great Hammer. Legend has it that this weapon was so heavy, no one could claim it, ultimately leading to its abandonment and forgotten state. However, following the introduction of The Ringed City DLC, it dropped to the second heaviest position in the game.
The curved blade of this giant sword stands out as significantly larger and apparently heavier compared to other Ultra Greatswords in the game. Despite numerous reductions in its damaging potential, striking a successful (yet painstakingly slow) hit with it remains incredibly gratifying.
How to get the Fume Ultra Greatsword:
Dropped by Knight Slayer Tsorig, found underneath the Smoldering Lake.
1. Ledo’s Great Hammer
Weight: 28.0

- Strength requirement: 60 STR
- Two-handed: 40 STR
Without a doubt, Ledo’s Great Hammer, debuted in the DLC “The Ringed City,” was crafted to eclipse the weight and size of both Smough’s and Morne’s Great Hammers. Its massive form is particularly effective at obstructing the player’s view within “Dark Souls 3.
This hammer demands an extraordinary amount of strength to wield in both hands, which is equivalent to handling only half of the other massive weapons mentioned here. Attempting to dual-wield two of these hammers? That’s a suggestion I would politely pass on, my friend.
Enthusiasts of this creature will discover its doppelganger, the colossal Giant Crusher, within Elden Ring, offering a comical appearance to match. However, it’s best to avoid mockery when witnessing someone using it, as it could be misconstrued as underestimating its power.
How to get Ledo’s Great Hammer:
Dropped by the Silver Knight Ledo invader, found while exploring The Ringed City DLC area.
