Summary
- Quantic Dream has not been adversely affected by recent NetEase studio closures and layoffs.
- According to the company’s CEO, all projects are currently moving ahead at “full pace.”
- Fans are hoping to get an update on the upcoming title Star Wars Eclipse soon.
Quantic Dream, the team behind the upcoming game Star Wars Eclipse, has eased fan concerns by confirming that production is progressing well amidst rumors of studio closures from their parent company, NetEase Games. Besides Star Wars Eclipse, this French developer has also created renowned games such as Detroit: Become Human and Fahrenheit.
After 25 years as an autonomous studio, Quantic Dream was completely bought out by previous minority shareholder NetEase in August 2022. This transition was characterized as a means to empower the French developer to carry on creating its own games while also working towards publishing titles from other creators. However, by February 2025, there were whispers about Quantic Dream’s future, with China-based NetEase supposedly planning to close several international branches. Lately, the team behind Heavy Rain has essentially quelled such concerns with a public statement clarifying their current situation amidst the cost-cutting measures being implemented by their parent company.
In a recent LinkedIn post, Guillaume de Fondaumière, CEO and Head of Publishing at Quantic Dream, expressed his sadness over studio closures and layoffs at certain companies under NetEase. However, he reassured fans that neither the Paris nor Montreal branches of Quantic Dream have been affected negatively. In fact, the company is forging ahead with its projects and is actively recruiting new talent in both France and Canada.
Quantic Dream Is Making Progress Amid a Period of Uncertainty
Despite other companies under NetEase’s ownership encountering challenges, Quantic Dream appears to be thriving quite well, as suggested by the CEO’s statements. De Fondaumière disclosed that the year 2024 marked a significant high in terms of revenue for the company. This remarkable achievement was primarily due to increased sales of the game “Detroit: Become Human,” which saw a sale boost of two million units compared to the previous year, pushing the total sales of the 2018 release beyond 11 million.
Furthermore, the confidence expressed by Quantic Dream regarding their ongoing projects might be interpreted as a promising development for the eagerly awaited “Star Wars Eclipse.” This is particularly significant following the departure of its lead writer in August 2024 from the narrative-focused title. Additionally, a Quantic Dream executive mentioned that games in the company’s pipeline were moving forward according to plan, which could hint at an upcoming update for the long-awaited sci-fi game initially announced in December 2021.
Fans of the Star Wars universe are excited as they wait for updates on Quantic Dream’s Star Wars game, and there are several exciting releases within the franchise to look forward to in 2025. These include additional post-launch content for Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws, set to release in Spring, and a new season of Andor streaming on Disney+ starting in April.
