Bad news for those expecting to play Fable this year: it’s being delayed until 2026.
Crag Duncan, the leader of Xbox Game Studios, recently joined Tina Amini on the official Xbox podcast to share some updates.
Although Duncan expresses his enthusiasm regarding the game’s advancement and Playground Games’ current status, he acknowledges they require additional time. He shared this with Amini, saying, “I understand it may not be the news everyone wants to hear, but what I want to assure fans is that it will absolutely be worth the wait.
He strongly supported Playground, emphasizing their achievements with the Forza Horizon series in a lengthy statement.
I am completely convinced by the skills of the Playground team. With their impressive track record on Forza Horizon, particularly the last two critically-acclaimed, award-winning games that were visually stunning, ran smoothly, and offered great gameplay, they’ve certainly earned my trust. Add to that their upcoming work on Fable, which promises stunning visuals, a British sense of humor, and an interpretation of Albion that draws inspiration from the franchise’s past while offering something new. Frankly, it’s shaping up to be the most breathtaking version of Albion yet. So, I am genuinely excited about their plans for Fable and the future of gaming. It’s important for our community to know that we make these decisions with the best interests of the games, the teams, and ultimately, you – the gamers – in mind, which leads to outstanding games for everyone.
Team Xbox Only Has One Shot to Reboot Fable Successfully

It might be surprising to know that the Fable series once played a significant role in Microsoft’s Xbox brand, but this fact remains true. The first Fable game on the original Xbox didn’t quite meet its grand and impractical promises, yet it was an outstanding action RPG. Fable 2 for the Xbox 360 is a remarkable sequel that continues to impress even today.
Ever since the grand days of Fable 3, the franchise seems to have taken a backseat in my gaming world. That third installment didn’t quite live up to expectations, leaving us craving more from the series. Unfortunately, all we’ve been getting are spin-offs for the last fifteen years.
Previously, Xbox has struggled with reviving their famous franchises effectively. While Halo Infinite isn’t a poor game, it didn’t manage to engage players like previous Halo games did. Playground Games have been focusing on Fable, and we haven’t had a new Forza Horizon since 2021. Mystifyingly, Banjo-Kazooie hasn’t made an appearance. Starfield didn’t meet expectations and has sparked doubts about the quality of future Elder Scrolls releases.
It’s reasonable for Fable to bake a bit longer, considering it won’t go head-to-head with Grand Theft Auto 6 anymore. Here’s hoping the delay turns out to be a blessing in disguise.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve gotten my hands on some fresh pre-alpha gameplay clips, and let me tell you, it’s looking mighty impressive! But here’s the thing, while the visuals are captivating, it remains to be seen if it can recapture the enchanting charm and clever wit that made the previous Fable games so endearing.
