Summary
- DC Studios’ top executives clarify Pattinson won’t play two Batman roles due to separate cinematic universes.
- Pattinson likely won’t reprise his role as Batman in the mainline DCU for The Brave And The Bold.
- Reeves’ Batman universe won’t overlap with Brave & The Bold either and might delay releases to avoid clashes.
Discussing the impact of “The Batman” and its spinoff “The Penguin,” it’s clear they have significantly shaped the portrayal of Gotham City and its Dark Knight in modern pop culture. Now, the masterminds at DC Studios, led by James Gunn, are considering if this success warrants the film’s lead character taking on the role of Batman in the primary cinematic universe.
Prior to its release, there was much doubt about The Batman. However, both fans and critics were impressed by Matt Reeves’ innovative approach to the project. He brought a fresh perspective to Gotham and its characters, one that hadn’t been seen for quite some time. The film also successfully justified the choice of Robert Pattinson, former heartthrob from Twilight, as the lead character. Fans were treated to an exceptional portrayal of Bruce Wayne, which was a fitting replacement for Ben Affleck’s well-liked version in the DCEU. Although fans are eagerly waiting for the sequel, The Batman Part II, it appears there are delays for several good reasons. The most significant reason seems to be avoiding overlap with the planned mainline film, Batman: The Brave And The Bold.
In contrast to the speculation that Robert Pattinson might play two different Batmans in the mainline DCU and the upcoming new DCU, it appears that this is highly unlikely according to James Gunn and Peter Safran. During a recent press event at Warner Bros. Discovery, they made it clear that while they have discussed various options for continuity, no serious discussions have taken place about Pattinson reprising his role as Batman in their new universe. They emphasized that they have not planned to integrate Matt Reeves’ Elseworld Batman into the DCU.

James Gunn frequently debunks speculations about who’ll play Batman in the DC Universe, and this latest clarification is no exception for the busy director. Robert Pattinson isn’t being considered for the role, but that doesn’t mean Gunn and his team don’t admire his performance in ‘The Batman.’ Instead, they’re focused on introducing a new Batman character into the DC Universe, as confirmed by Safran. This new Batman will be featured in ‘Brave and the Bold,’ but it won’t be an origin story. Instead, it marks the beginning of a new era for DC Studios. However, whether ‘The Brave And The Bold’ is where we’ll first meet this new Batman isn’t definitive, as Gunn hinted that he might appear elsewhere first. What is certain is that there’s currently no actor cast for the role yet.
It’s evident that the TV series “Batman: The Brave and the Bold” needs a fresh approach when it comes to Batman, moving away from Reeves’ heavy-handed crime saga titled “Batman Epic.” Unfortunately, having Robert Pattinson playing Batman in two versions makes this transformation impossible. Although he would be an excellent choice for casting purposes, James Gunn and Peter Safran should consider other options. There are several talented actors who could fill the role, and there’s still plenty of time before the DCU’s Detective Dark Knight makes his return. For now, fans should trust the creative process and concentrate on this year’s significant release, “Superman.
You can find “The Batman” streaming online right now on Max, and its sequel, titled “The Batman Part II,” is scheduled to hit theaters on October 2nd, 2027.
