The extraordinary performances of Deadpool and Wolverine caught fans off guard, as these characters nearly headlined their own standalone films. Now, someone associated with the project shares insights about the abandoned project and how it would have offered a distinctive take on these iconic characters.

As a movie enthusiast, I must say that the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” was an absolute spectacle, boasting a multiverse-traversing plot and an impressive roster of over 40 notable appearances from various Marvel characters. Despite the abundance of intriguing characters and action-packed scenes, it was Channing Tatum’s electrifying portrayal of Gambit that truly stole the show. His dedication to embodying the character’s signature quirks and Cajun accent resulted in a flurry of side-splitting comedic moments amidst the already bustling action comedy.

Interestingly, many cinema-goers found themselves yearning for more of Tatum’s mutant character, unaware that Tatum himself had previously attempted – alas, unsuccessfully – to bring Gambit to the big screen. This past disappointment led him to steer clear of MCU projects. Yet here he was, bringing Gambit back to life in a way that left fans eagerly anticipating a possible return for this charismatic character.

Regrettably, the long-awaited Gambit movie, which had remained unproduced for so long, came to a halt when Disney purchased Fox and opted to reboot the entire X-Men franchise, discarding everything in development as part of this change. In an interview with Business Insider about the abandoned project, actress Lizzy Caplan, who was connected to it towards the end of 2017, showed surprise at the decision and voiced her thoughts on the project’s distinctive approach. “It was a very intriguing concept. It’s somewhat surprising that it got axed. Usually, these movies don’t get cancelled, but this one did.” Caplan mused.

She went on to explain, “We were traveling along when we planned to film it. I believe there was a specific start date for the project. I had previously met with Channing, and there were several options being considered… We even had a director at one point, but things changed. Nevertheless, I attended numerous meetings with Channing and other producers discussing our idea. Our concept was to create a romantic comedy in a 1930s style, set within that era, which would have been quite entertaining.

Caplan joined the project to play the main female character in the film, making her an expert on the movie’s overall tone, which sounds fantastic. Even though fans might not be acquainted with 1930s screwball romantic comedies, anyone who watched Daredevil & Wolverine would undoubtedly listen to Tatum’s pitch for the lead role in a Gambit movie. His on-screen antics, some of which might not have made it into the final cut, were so hilarious that his co-star from Deadpool & Wolverine, while filming, pleaded with Tatum to stop because she couldn’t suppress her laughter when he was talking or acting, and maintaining the serious demeanor needed for her scenes became almost impossible.

Instead of immediately pushing for Ryan Reynolds to spearhead a major Gambit movie campaign at Marvel Studios, it’s more strategic to wait until the X-Men have their own standalone film. Just like John Krasinski’s Mr. Fantastic had a brief appearance before the announcement of the Fantastic Four: First Steps movie, it might be best for Deadpool and Wolverine not to receive spin-offs until the studio has clear intentions for integrating them into the franchise. It’s possible that a new version with different actors could be introduced, similar to how Mr. Fantastic and Blade have already been recast, but fans can hope that Gambit gets the green light when Marvel Studios decides to create a Gambit film.

Deadpool & Wolverine is available to stream on Disney+.
