Split Fiction’s Joef Fares Says They’ll Never Offer Microtransactions

Summary

  • Hazelight Studios does not include microtransactions in their games and plans to maintain this stance in the future.
  • Their upcoming game, Split Fiction, also won’t have microtransactions, promoting consumer-friendly features.
  • Despite being published by EA, known for microtransactions, Split Fiction remains microtransaction-free.

Hazelight Studios, known for games such as It Takes Two and A Way Out, has consistently avoided the inclusion of microtransactions in their releases, a trend that appears likely to continue so long as founder Jose Fares remains with the company.

2025 sees the release of the studio’s new game, Split Fiction, without any microtransactions – a welcome change in the gaming world for titles launching this year.

Hazelight’s Founder Has No Plans Of Selling The Studio

During an interview with MinnMax, Jose Fares was questioned about the companies that showed keen interest in purchasing Hazelight during the acquisition frenzy. Although Fares refused to reveal the specific company, he acknowledged that there was interest and made it clear that Hazelight is not up for sale at this time.

Fares clarified, “Hazelight remains ours; we’re committed to our work and passion for it, full stop. Moreover, we won’t ever go public or list on the stock market, take note of that, full stop. Lastly, you can count on us not to include microtransactions or unnecessary features in our games, just straight-up game development, full stop.

It’s a clear-cut argument, or even a strong point, for debating whether Hazelight should introduce microtransactions in their games, as well as for potential studio acquisitions.

The forthcoming game, Split Fiction, from our studio, stands out by avoiding any form of in-game transactions, and moreover, offers a user-friendly “Friend’s Share” option. This means that if you own the game, you can extend the privilege to a friend, allowing them to play together from the very beginning until the end.

It’s somewhat unexpected that Hazelight, despite being published by Electronic Arts – a company notorious for heavily promoting microtransactions, particularly through the Ultimate Packs in their sports titles like FIFA Football Club (EA Sports FC), Madden, and others – has taken a different approach to microtransactions.

Hazelight Studios’ upcoming venture, titled Split Fiction, is set to be published by Electronic Arts once more. The game will launch on March 7th, available for play on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms. Similar to their previous creations, it promises a purely cooperative gaming experience.

If you’ve never played ‘Split Fiction’, here’s what it offers: an extraordinary blend of action and adventure that will keep you on the edge of your seat with its unpredictable twists. One moment you might find yourself nurturing charming dragons, the next battling as cyber ninjas, evading menacing trolls, or dodging vehicles in the air launched by a robotic parking attendant. It’s eccentric, it’s exhilarating, and it’s meant to be enjoyed with others.
