Summary
- Lying is common in Resident Evil to hide past exploits and personal motives.
- Characters like Luis, Neil, and Simmons use deception for personal gain.
- Albert Wesker is the master manipulator who lies to manipulate and control others.
In the universe of Resident Evil, where survival requires self-reliance amidst a zombie apocalypse, dishonesty might surprisingly prove useful. While it’s undeniable that deceit has been a tool wielded by numerous villains to manipulate others, even some of the series’ heroes have chosen to withhold information for their own benefit on occasion.
In the world of Resident Evil, it’s often challenging to distinguish truth from deceit as almost every character seems to have their hidden agendas. Yet, there are certain characters who have shown a knack for bending the truth more than others. These are the ones I’ve come to suspect aren’t always telling it straight up.
8. Luis Serra
Luis Lied to Hide His Past As A Top Researcher For Saddler
In many parts of “Resident Evil 4”, Luis Serra, the enigmatic Spaniard, appears as a cheerful villager who boasts about his past as a cop in Madrid, but was actually involved in the Los Illuminados debacle. However, what he tells Leon at the start of the game with conviction is later found to be false; it was merely a disguise for his true role – that of one of Saddler’s top researchers.
Luis feels remorseful about his part in Saddler’s research, given the havoc it has wrought, and so he tries to hide his past by deceiving others with falsehoods and enigmas. However, this doesn’t automatically label him as a villain, as he does lend a helping hand to Leon and Ashley when they contract the infection. Yet, it’s worth noting that Luis has a tendency to be dishonest.
7. Neil Fisher
Neil Gained His Allies’ Trust To Get His Hands On The Uroboros Virus
In the opening chapters of Resident Evil Revelations 2, I found myself quite fond of Neil, a fellow member of TerraSave – the same organization Claire Redfield is part of. However, as the story unfolded, it became clear that he harbored some seriously dark intentions. At first, Neil presents himself as a guardian of TerraSave and its dedicated members. But, little did we know, this was just a clever facade. His supposed concern for our organization was nothing more than a twisted deception.
The main cause for Claire, Moira, and multiple TerraSave staff members being kidnapped and imprisoned was because Neil struck a deal with Alex Wesker. Deceiving some of his own team, Neil aimed to seize Uroboros, but eventually faces consequences for his actions, which are further unfolded in the game.
6. Derek Simmons
Simmons Lies Constantly To His Comrades, And Even Himself
From a superficial perspective, given Simmons’ lofty government position, he appears to be an ordinary, law-abiding individual. However, this is merely a facade concealing his hidden aspirations from those lower in the hierarchy. The most unfortunate casualty of his deception is Sherry, who is led astray for much of Resident Evil 6‘s narrative, erroneously believing that Simmons isn’t responsible for the entire C-virus outbreak. This misconception even creates tension between her and her old friend Leon.
In another perspective, Simmons often deceives himself as well. For instance, when Ada denies him, instead of facing reality, Simmons chooses to create a ‘new’ Ada by birthing a clone named Carla. This is because he can’t accept the genuine feelings of Ada and prefers to live in self-delusion.
5. Ada Wong
The Mysterious Spy Is Always Twisting The Truth To Get What She Wants
Since Ada is a secretive spy who often manipulates the truth for the sake of her missions, it can be challenging to discern whether she speaks honestly or deceitfully. In fact, Ada’s first scene in the series demonstrates this, as she feigns being an FBI agent to win Leon’s trust, and surprisingly, her ruse is successful.
Ada’s relationship with Leon gradually develops to a point where she becomes slightly more truthful, but as a spy, deceit is a crucial skill she often employs in various scenarios throughout the games. For instance, in the finale of the Resident Evil 4 Remake, she pretended to endorse Wesker’s Uroboros plan, praising it, but in reality, her feelings were far from positive about his scheme to destroy the world. This is evident when she expresses her disapproval after hanging up the phone, hinting at her true sentiments.
4. Lucas Baker
Lucas Lied About Being Under Evie’s Control To Survive
In the game “Resident Evil 7”, the Baker Family is depicted as a cruel and bloodthirsty group of humans who appear to have undergone an infection. However, Lucas stands out from the rest. Although he shares the same Mold infection as his parents, he has been secretly taking medication to break free from Eveline’s control. This allows him more autonomy compared to the rest of the family.
In essence, Lucas found himself in a predicament where he had to maintain his deceit towards Eveline, feigning loyalty for an extended period. This charade continued until Ethan eventually unveiled the truth. It’s clear that despite Lucas’ self-condemnation, there’s no denying his exceptional skill in deception, a trait that kept him alive amidst the threatening presence of Eveline, the ominous B.O.W.
3. Clive O’Brian
O’Brian Isn’t Afraid To Give His Agents False Information If It Contributes To The Mission
As the head of the BSAA, O’Brian has a duty to do all he can to stop the spread of bioterror across the world, even if that means lying to his own agents, as he does in Revelations. O’Brian sends Jill and Parker to the Queen Zenobia with the task of ‘rescuing’ Chris Redfield, but it’s not long before they realize this entire plan was actually made up.
O’Brian planned to thrust the duo into a perilous scenario, with the aim of luring Veltro out and unmasking them for their involvement in the Terragrigia Incident. It’s safe to say Jill wasn’t thrilled about O’Brian’s deceit, making him appear rather ambiguous in terms of morality within the broader series.
2. Osmund Saddler
Saddler’s Clever Way With Words Fooled An Entire Village Into Becoming His Loyal Servants
In the Resident Evil 4 Remake, if players bring Ashley back to Mendez’s house, they can discover a document revealing Saddler’s extensive deception. This revelation ultimately ascends him to the head of an entire army, as he is exposed as a master manipulator. Initially, when Saddler entered the village, he deceptively persuaded the villagers that they required purification for their ‘transgressions’. He also attempted to pass off the Los Illuminados as a benevolent organization with noble objectives at heart.
Indeed, it’s important to clarify that Saddler’s true objective was not as initially perceived – he did not intend to spread the infection innocuously through Ashley across America, causing a national outbreak. Instead, his deception allowed him to amass a vast army of devoted followers, which ultimately required Leon to confront and neutralize in his quest to rescue Ashley.
1. Albert Wesker
Wesker Tricked The Whole STARS Team Into Partaking In His Little Experiment
It’s widely known that Albert Wesker, the main antagonist across the series, is an expert at manipulation. This skill has led him to tell numerous falsehoods throughout his various appearances. For instance, in the initial game, he repeatedly lied about the entire situation to conceal his employment by Umbrella. Remarkably, he even attempted to shift blame onto Barry, despite the fact that Wesker was the one who had blackmailed Barry into working for him initially.
I’ve come to realize that Wesker doesn’t shy away from deception, especially when it comes to those who follow his lead. He’s willing to weave a web of sweet untruths as long as they remain steadfast in their commitment to his cause. For instance, in Resident Evil 5, he swore an eternal bond with Excella, only to later inject her with Uroboros and send her off to mutate and perish once she was no longer useful. This chilling act of betrayal paints him as a ruthless and sadistic figure.
