How to catch a Sandstar in Monster Hunter Wilds

Catching a Sandstar in Monster Hunter Wilds is undeniably the most challenging among the endemic life quests; it even has an achievement associated with it. However, if you aim to finish Samin’s Special Research Report quest and wrap up your endemic life hunts, determination will be key.

The Sandstar can be challenging to acquire due to two primary factors:

1. It moves at an astonishing speed, quicker than your Seikret, making it difficult to keep up with.
2. It appears only in specific locations and at particular times.

However, I’ve gathered all the essential details for you, including a tip on how to catch one of these elusive creatures in Monster Hunter Wilds. The information is presented below.

Monster Hunter Wilds Sandstar location

The elusive Sandstar can be discovered in sector 11/13 of the Windward Plains, specifically near the sand dunes close to the desert oasis. What you’re essentially seeking is a peculiar, bird-like orb creature with a vibrant blue hue, long legs, and an extended black tail adorned with another smaller blue orb. An interesting detail to note is that the Sandstar appears exclusively during the nighttime of the season of abundance, when the area is revitalized, the skies are clear, and everything is blanketed in lush greenery.

To determine if it’s the opportune moment (abundance), take a peek at your map in the upper left corner. Aim for it to display “Nighttime/Plenty”. If you want to increase your chances, spend Guild Points to alter the time within your tent, but remember this method isn’t foolproof as it’s quite rare. Additionally, be aware that the Sandstar cannot be approached stealthily; it will flee at its maximum speed before you can get close.

A more straightforward way to put this would be:

To subdue the Sandstar, consider utilizing a Screamer Pod. These might ring a bell as the projectiles you used to stun the Balahara swarm during the initial levels. You can obtain these by using your Hook Slinger to snag an Echo Feather from a Baunos. Many of these flying reptiles can be found in area 4 on the Windward Plains’ upper level, with some also present in area 11 near the Sandstar location. Once you’ve located the Sandstar, fire the projectile at it and swiftly switch to your capture net from the essential items hotwheel to catch it while it’s stunned. Here’s a video demonstration showing the process.

If you find the idea of following those steps too demanding, an alternative approach is to give chase on your Seikret. Typically, the Sandstar may turn back toward you at specific locations, making this a favorable moment. Should you successfully pursue it from area 12 ravine into areas 7 and 8, the Sandstar could get caught by thorny grass or trampled by Ceratonoth, providing an opportunity for you to capture it.

After obtaining the Sandstar, you’ll earn the “Caught a Shooting Star” achievement, along with which, Samin rewards you with five wild herbs, ten units of honey, and 300 Guild Points.
