Currently, it’s an exciting period for fans who love pirates, particularly in the realm of video gaming. This is due to the release of “Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii.” However, this game isn’t the only one that has captured the interest of gamers; over the past few years, there have been numerous pirate games emerging, such as “Skull and Bones” and “Sea of Thieves.
The swashbuckling pirate movie genre has seen a bit of a lull in theaters lately, however, it’s not all bad news! After immersing yourself in the unique blend of pirates and yakuza presented in “Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii”, you can continue the swashbuckling fun by exploring more offbeat pirate tales across various film genres. Keep the pirate spirit alive and enjoy these unconventional pirate escapades!
7. Castle In The Sky
A Studio Ghibli Classic
In the realm of my admiration for Studio Ghibli’s masterpieces, “Castle in the Sky” stands out as one of their earlier productions during their golden era. Unlike the pirate escapades set upon the seas, this tale unfolds amidst the clouds, where sky pirates seek an ancient relic. The object of their pursuit is a young girl named Sheeta, who carries within her a crystal that promises access to the legendary floating city above the skies.
As she flees, Sheeta encounters a youth named Pazu, who shields her from the clutches of the sky pirates and government personnel seeking to capitalize on her enigmatic ancestry. To this day, the animation in this journey remains impressive, outclassing many contemporary animated films.
6. Deep Rising
A Pirate Robbery Gone Wrong
Deep Rising, distinct from the Dead Rising video game franchise, is a contemporary pirate film from the 90s. A band of mercenaries are employed to seize control of a cruise liner, yet upon boarding, they discover it deserted. In fact, they encounter sea monsters preying on humans, consuming them at a pace similar to children rapidly devouring sweets during a Fourth of July parade.
This movie offers an inventive take on its genre, sporting realistic effects that may seem slightly over-the-top at times. It evokes thoughts of “Yakuza: Dead Souls” rather than “Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii,” but regardless, “Deep Rising” is a delightful and cheesy pirate adventure.
5. The Goonies
Never Say Die
The Goonies is a timeless 80s film that centers around every child’s fantasy – uncovering an ancient treasure map hidden in their own backyard. In this tale, a group of kids from Astoria, Oregon, accidentally come across such a map and can’t resist the adventure it promises. Following the map, they find themselves at the entrance of a cave where they believe pirate-buried treasures still lie waiting to be discovered.
Is the place still intact, or does a surprise await us? No matter if there’s a twist or not, these children are being pursued by an ominous mother and her two equally sinister sons in “The Goonies”. This classic film is a must-watch for anyone who appreciates 80s cinema and an exciting pirate-themed treasure hunt.
4. Hook
Rufiooooooo!
The film version titled “Hook” offers a lively reinterpretation of “Peter Pan,” receiving criticism that it doesn’t deserve. The cast seems to be enjoying themselves immensely on set, particularly the villainous characters such as Dustin Hoffman who delivers an outstanding portrayal of Captain Hook. This story takes us into a realm where Peter, played by Robin Williams, has matured and started a family. When his children go missing, he revisits Neverland to recover memories of the Lost Boys that he had long forgotten.
This isn’t an action-packed pirate tale on the open ocean, but it does offer a delightful blend of pirates and their lifestyle. It’s enjoyable to watch Williams in this film, reminding us of the golden age when he truly sparkled. For those interested, the Super NES game based on Hook, produced by Sony before the PlayStation 1, was also worth playing.
3. Muppet Treasure Island
Boom Shakalaka
Although Muppet Treasure Island might not initially seem like it would captivate fans of Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, it could very well be the standout choice among the options. Unlike Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii which incorporates music within its storyline, Muppet Treasure Island is an all-out musical that reimagines the classic tale of Treasure Island, with the Muppets taking center stage.
Although designed primarily for children, this puppet show contains some somber scenes, such as several deaths. Among the various Muppet films, many fans argue about which one takes the crown, but undeniably, Muppet Treasure Island ranks among the top contenders.
2. One Piece Film: Red
A Pop Idol’s Dream
Regarding pirate-themed anime, nothing surpasses the expertise of “One Piece”. Given the numerous films available, it can be challenging to recommend just one suitable viewing option for fans of “Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii”. However, the newest adaptation, “One Piece Film: Red”, is certainly a strong contender for consideration. In this film, the Straw Hat Pirates attend a concert by an idol named UTA.
Following this, they come to understand that UTA is ensnaring its audience in an ethereal state, aiming to establish a utopia devoid of wicked pirates. With impressive animation, thrilling battle sequences, and tunes catchier than ever before echoing throughout, it’s a captivating selection. However, for those new to One Piece, following the intricate character dynamics might prove challenging.
1. Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl
Where Has The Rum Gone?
It was surprising to see how Disney managed to transform one of their theme park attractions, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, into such a thriving movie franchise. Given its origins as an amusement ride, it seemed unlikely to succeed, but it proved otherwise, earning massive profits at the box office when it debuted in 2003 and launching one of the most successful film series of the decade.
Regarding the quality of this franchise’s latest installment, opinions may vary, but its original story continues to shine as an exemplary pirate adventure. The character of Jack Sparrow remains iconic and is skillfully utilized, while the action sequences are expertly staged. Captain Barbossa, our villain, is a captivating and charming rogue, adding depth to the tale. The ensemble cast is impressive, contributing significantly to the success of this adaptation.
