4A Games Ukraine and renowned Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn share the commonality that they are not planning to release a new Metro game anytime in the near future.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve always found myself captivated by the labyrinthine underworld tunnels of Moscow in my favorite games. But alas, it seems we’ll be exploring lush South American jungles instead, as the team once known as 4A Games Ukraine has metamorphosed into a new entity called Reburn.
The Ukrainian veteran outfit announced the style change together with its new game, La Quimera.
In the year 2064, the story unfolds in a world where the concept of nations as we know it has been replaced by smaller successor states and tribes. These new entities often hire private military companies (PMCs) for their underhanded tasks. That’s where you step in!
As a contractor for a Private Military Company, I find myself deeply entrenched within the heart of Latin America, navigating through a brutal internal conflict between factions that seems even more treacherous than the dense, unforgiving wilderness that surrounds me.
2064, just a few short decades from now, finds La Quimera embracing an advanced, futuristic landscape. PMC operatives are equipped with exoskeletons, robots roam freely, and technology reigns supreme across the board – except for a few characters brandishing modernized Kalashnikov rifles in the trailer. It seems they’re holding onto tradition amidst progress!
As a gaming enthusiast, I find myself immersed in a world that feels straight out of the mind of Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn, renowned for gritty masterpieces like Drive and the Pusher trilogy.
On the Steam platform, the listing for the game “La Quimera” has been activated, however, it currently lacks details regarding system specifications, potential availability on other platforms, and an estimated launch date.
In a chat with GamesBeat, Reburn’s chief executive officer, Dmitro Lymar, voiced his aspirations for independently publishing the game, though no definitive choice has been taken yet.
End Of The Line For Metro?
Following the success of Metro Exodus by 4A Games in 2019, numerous enthusiasts eagerly anticipated a fresh project that would showcase the charm of the enhanced engine within Moscow once more.
For a brief moment, Metro Awakening satisfied my craving for something new, but due to being a virtual reality game, its influence was somewhat confined and didn’t fully explore its potential.
4A Games has functioned as two distinct studios since 2014, with one team based in Malta and another in Ukraine. The Malta-based studio of 4A was purchased by Embracer in 2020, leaving the Ukrainian office to continue operating independently.
It appears that the transition to Reburn involves solely 4A Games Ukraine and, for now, it doesn’t seem to directly impact the Metro IP as we can see initially. During a PlayStation State of Play event in January 2024, 4A Games Malta mentioned that a new Metro game was still being developed, but since then, details have been scarce.
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but feel a warm sense of appreciation for whatever lies ahead for Metro, knowing that Reborn remains true to the 4A Entertainment legacy by collaborating with gifted narrative artists. This dedication ensures a continuation of immersive, cinematic gaming journeys.
